gold adornment, and if you anoint your eyes with mascara, your beauty will be in vain.
Your paramours rejected you; they are seeking your soul. 31 For I heard the sound of
your groaning like that of a woman in labor, like that of a woman giving birth to her
first. The voice of the daughter of Zion will fail, and she will relax her hands. "Woe is
me! For my soul is fainting over those who have been slain."
Jeremiah 5
1 "Run around in the roads of Jerusalem; look, know, and seek in her streets. If you
find a man, if there is one who executes judgment and seeks faith, I will be merciful to
them," says the Lord. 2 "As the Lord lives," they say. Because of this, are they not
swearing to lies? 3 O Lord, your eyes are on faith. You scourged them, yet they did not
suffer; you finished them off, yet they did not want to accept discipline. They made
their faces more solid than rock; they did not want to return.
4 I said, "Perhaps they are poor, since they are not able, for they did not know the
way of the Lord and the justice of God. 5 I will go to the stout and speak to them, for
they recognized the way of the Lord and the justice of God. Behold, with one accord
they smashed the yoke; they broke the bonds. 6 Because of this, a lion out of the forest
toyed with them, a wolf eliminated them as far as their houses, and a leopard watched
over their cities. All who go out from them will be hunted, for they multiplied their
ungodly acts; they became strong in their diversions."
7 "For which of these should I be merciful to you? Your sons abandoned me and
swore by those who are not gods. I fed them, yet they committed adultery and lodged
in the houses of prostitutes. 8 They became womanizing horses; each one neighed for
the wife of his neighbor. 9 Won't I conduct an inspection of these things?" says the Lord,
"or won't my soul take vengeance on such a nation as this?
10 Go up upon her battlements and raze them, but do not make an end. Leave her
buttresses, for they are the Lord's. 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah
acted treacherously against me," says the Lord. 12 They lied to their own Lord, and they
said, "These things are not so; wicked things will not arrive over us, and we will not see
sword and famine." 13 Our prophets became like wind, and the word of the Lord did not
exist in them; so it will be for them.
14 Because of this, thus says the almighty Lord: "Since you spoke this word, behold, I
have given my words into your mouth as fire and this people as wood, and it will
devour them. 15 Behold, I will bring upon you a nation from afar, O house of Israel,"
says the Lord, "a nation the sound of whose language one will not hear. 16 All of them
are strong. 17 They will devour your harvest and your bread, they will devour your sons
and your daughters, they will devour your sheep and your calves, and they will devour
your vineyards, your fig yards, and your olive yards. They will thresh with the sword
your fortified cities in which you trusted.
18 It will be in those days," says the Lord your God, "that I will not bring you to an
end. 19 It will be that, whenever you say, `Why did the Lord our God do all these things
to us?´ you will say to them, `Because you served strange gods in your land, so you
will serve strangers in a land which is not yours.´
20 Announce these things to the house of Jacob, and let them be heard in that of
