numerous in every place; I will impose silence."
4 Now hear this, you who oppress the needy in the morning and overpower the poor
away from the land, 5 who say, "When will the month pass and we will sell, and the
sabbaths and we will open treasure chests in order to make the measure small, to
enlarge weights, and to make the balance unjust, 6 in order to buy the poor with silver
and the one who is humble in return for sandals, and we will trade in every kind of
product?"
7 The Lord swears against the arrogance of Jacob, "Surely none of your actions
resulting in abuse will ever be forgotten. 8 Won't the land be disturbed by these things?
Won't everyone who resides on it mourn? Destruction will ascend like a river and
descend like the river of Egypt. 9 It will be on that day," says the Lord God, "that the sun
will go down at noon and the light will be darkened over the land during the day. 10 I
will turn your festivals into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will bring
sackcloth over every waist and baldness over every head. I will make it for him like
mourning for a loved one, and for those who are with him like a day of grief.
11 Behold, days are coming," says the Lord, "and I will send out a famine over the
land. It will not be a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the
word of the Lord. 12 The waters will be disturbed as far as the sea, and from the north
to the east they will run around seeking the word of the Lord, yet they will not find it.
13 On that day the beautiful virgins and the young men will faint in thirst. 14 Those who
swear by the mercy of Samaria and say, `Your god lives, O Dan, and your god lives, O
Beersheba,´ will fall and not rise again."
Amos 9
1 I saw the Lord standing on the altar, and he said, "Attack the mercy seat, and the
gateways will be shaken. Cut through to the heads of all, and I will kill the remnants of
them with the sword. Even though they flee, none of them will escape, and even
though they return safely, none of them will be rescued. 2 If they sink into Hades, my
hand will pull them up from there; if they ascend into heaven, I will bring them down
from there. 3 If they hide on the summit of Carmel, I will search them out and take them
from there; if they plunge out of my eyesight into the depths of the sea, I will
command the dragon there and he will bite them. 4 If they go into captivity before the
face of their enemies, I will command the sword there and it will kill them. I will set my
eyes against them resulting in wicked things, and not in good things."
5 The Lord God Almighty is the one who takes hold of the land and shakes it, and all
who reside on it will mourn. Its termination will ascend like a river and descend like the
river of Egypt. 6 He is the one who builds his ascent into heaven and establishes his
promise on the earth, who summons the water of the sea and pours it out over the
surface of the earth; the Lord God Almighty is his name. 7 "Aren't you like the sons of
the Ethiopians to me, O sons of Israel?" says the Lord. "Didn't I bring Israel up out of
the land of Egypt, the Philistines out of Cappadocia, and the Syrians out of the pit?
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are over the kingdom of sinners. I will cut it off
from the surface of the earth; nevertheless, I will not completely cut off the house of
Jacob," says the Lord. 9 "For behold, I am giving a command; I will sift the house of
