strength, 31 but those who wait for God will regain strength. They will grow wings like
eagles; they will run and not become tired; they will walk and not become hungry.
Isaiah 41
1 "Be restored to me, O islands, for the rulers will change strength. Let them
approach and speak together, then let them declare a judgment. 2 Who raised up
righteousness from the east and summoned her to his feet, and she will go? He will
give her before nations and astonish kings; he will give their swords to the earth and
their bows like discarded sticks. 3 He will pursue them; the way of his feet will pass
through in peace. 4 Who operated and performed these things? The one who summoned
her has been summoning her from generations of old. I, God, am the first, and I am for
the things which are coming. 5 Nations saw and were afraid; the ends of the earth
approached and came together, 6 each one judging to help his neighbor and his brother.
He will say, 7 `The craftsman became strong, as did the coppersmith who beats with a
hammer while he forges.´ At some time he will say, `The seam is fine!´ They
strengthened them with nails; they will place them, and they will not be moved.
8 You, O Israel, my servant Jacob whom I chose, the seed of Abraham whom I loved,
9 whom I took hold of from the ends of the earth, I summoned you from its lookouts,
and I said to you, `You are my servant; I chose you and did not abandon you.´ 10 Do
not be afraid, for I am with you; do not wander, for I am your God, the one who
strengthened you. I helped you and made you secure by my righteous right hand.
11 Behold, all who oppose you will be ashamed and disgraced, for they will be as though
they were not; all your adversaries will perish. 12 You will seek them, and you will not
find the men who would do violence to you, for they will be as though they were not;
those who battle against you will be no more. 13 For I am your God who holds your right
hand, the one who says to you, 14 `Do not be afraid, O Jacob, O little Israel. I helped
you,´ says the God who redeems you, O Israel. 15 Behold, I made you like new sawshaped
threshing wheels of a wagon; you will thresh mountains and pulverize hills, and
make them like dust. 16 You will winnow, and the wind will take them; a hurricane will
scatter them. You will be cheerful among the holy ones of Israel.
17 The poor and the needy will be glad, for they will seek water, and there will be
none; their tongues dried up due to thirst. I am the Lord God; I, the God of Israel, will
listen and will not abandon them, 18 but I will open rivers on the mountains and
fountains in the midst of plains. I will turn the desert into marshes and connect the
thirsty land to watercourses. 19 I will place in the waterless land the cedar, the boxwood,
the myrtle, the cypress, and the white poplar, 20 so that together they may see, know,
perceive, and understand that the hand of the Lord did all these things, and the Holy
One of Israel displayed them.
21 Your judgment approaches," says the Lord God. "Your counsels have approached,"
says the King of Jacob. 22 "Let them approach and declare to you the things which will
happen, or say what the former things were. `We will understand with our minds, and
we will know what will be the last things and the things which are coming; tell us!
23 Declare to us the things which are coming at last, and we will know that you are gods.
Do well and be wicked, and we will wonder and see at the same time. 24 For where are
