22 For thus says the Lord: `I will take from the choice parts of the cedar; I will trim
from the top of their hearts, A and I will transplant it on a high mountain. 23 I will hang it
on a lofty mountain of Israel. I will transplant it, and it will bring forth a blossom and
produce a fruit. It will be a great cedar; every beast will rest underneath it, and every
bird will rest under its shadow. Its branches will be restored. 24 All the trees of the field
will know that I am the Lord, who humbles the exalted tree and exalts the humble tree,
who withers the green tree and causes the withered tree to flourish. I the Lord have
spoken, and I will do it.´"
Ezekiel 18
1 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 2 "Son of man, what does this
illustration among the sons of Israel mean to you? They are saying, `The fathers ate
unripe grapes, and the teeth of the children were set on edge.´ 3 As I live," says the
Lord, "surely this illustration will no longer be said in Israel. 4 For all souls are mine. As is
the soul of the father, so also is the soul of the son; they are mine. The soul which sins,
this one will die.
5 But the man who will be righteous, who will perform justice and righteousness, 6 he
will not eat on the mountains, will not lift up his eyes to the considerations of the house
of Israel, will not defile the wife of his neighbor, will not come near to a woman who is
in menstruation, 7 and will not overpower a man. He will give back the pledge of a
debtor, will not take any plunder, will give his bread to one who is hungry, will clothe
one who is naked, 8 will not give his silver at interest, will not receive excess, will turn
his hand away from wrongdoing, and will perform a righteous judgment between a man
and his neighbor. 9 He has gone by my ordinances and has preserved my righteous
decrees in order to perform them. This one is righteous; he will live the life," says the
Lord.
10 "If he conceives as a son a scoundrel who poured out blood, performed sins, 11 and
did not go in the way of his righteous father, but ate on the mountains, defiled the wife
of his neighbor, 12 overpowered one who is poor and needy, took plunder, did not give
back a pledge, set his eyes on idols, performed lawlessness, 13 gave with interest, and
received excess, this one will not live the life; he performed all these lawless acts. He
will be put to death; his blood will be on him.
14 But if he conceives a son, and he sees all the sins of his father which he
performed, and is afraid and does not act in agreement with these, 15 and he did not eat
on the mountains, did not set his eyes on the considerations of the house of Israel, did
not defile the wife of his neighbor, 16 did not overpower a man, did not demand a
pledge, did not take plunder, gave his bread to the one who is hungry, clothed one who
is naked, 17 turned his hand away from wrongdoing, did not receive interest or excess,
performed righteousness and went in my ordinances, he will not be deceased in the
wrongdoings of his father; he will live the life. 18 But if his father oppresses and takes
A the choice parts of the cedar; I will trim from the top of their hearts V ¦ the choice
parts of the cedar, from the top [of their hearts A], and I will give its shoots from the
head. I will trim their hearts A
