Jeremiah 39 C
1 The word which was directed at Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year for King
Zedekiah; this was the eighteenth year for King Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.
2 The force of the king of Babylon made a palisade against Jerusalem, and Jeremiah was
being guarded in the courtyard of the prison, which was in the house of the king, 3 in
which King Zedekiah shut him up, saying, "For what reason are you prophesying,
saying, `Thus says the Lord: "Behold, I am giving this city into the hands of the king of
Babylon, and he will take it. 4 Zedekiah will not be saved from the hand of the
Chaldeans, for he will be delivered up into the hands of the king of Babylon. His mouth
will speak to his mouth, and his eyes will see his eyes. 5 Zedekiah will enter Babylon and
sit there"´?"
6 The word of the Lord was directed at Jeremiah, saying, 7 "Behold, Hanamel son of
Shallum, the brother of your father, is coming to you, saying, `Acquire for yourself my
field which is in Anathoth, for you have the right to take it over in an acquisition.´"
8 Hanamel son of Shallum, the brother of my father, came to me in the courtyard of the
prison and said to me, "Acquire my field which is in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,
for you have the right to acquire it, and you are the elder." I knew that it was the word
of the Lord. 9 I acquired the field of Hanamel, the son of the brother of my father, and I
weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver. 10 I wrote it on a scroll, sealed it, took
the testimony of witnesses, and weighed out the silver in a balance. 11 I took the scroll
of acquisition, the one which had been sealed and the one which had been read, 12 and
I gave it to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, before the eyes of Hanamel, the
son of the brother of my father, before the eyes of those who stood and wrote in the
scroll of acquisition, and before the eyes of the Judeans who were in the courtyard of
the prison. 13 I ordered Baruch before their eyes, saying, 14 "So said the almighty Lord:
`Take this scroll of acquisition and the scroll which has been read; you will place it in a
ceramic vessel, so that it may remain for many days.´ 15 For so said the Lord: `Fields,
houses, and vineyards will still be acquired in this land.´"
16 I prayed to the Lord after I gave the scroll of acquisition to Baruch son of Neriah,
saying, 17 "O Lord, the one who is, you made heaven and earth by your great strength,
and by your high and elevated arm; nothing is hidden from you. 18 You, who perform
mercy for thousands and pay back the sins of the fathers into the laps of their children
after them, are the great and strong God, 19 the Lord of great counsel, the one who is
powerful in actions, the great almighty God, and the Lord of great name. Your eyes are
on the ways of the sons of men to give to each according to his way. 20 You performed
signs and wonders in the land of Egypt until this day, in Israel, and among the
