Jeremiah 43 A
1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, the word of the Lord
was directed at me, saying, 2 "Take for yourself a page of a scroll and write on it all the
words which I issued to you against Jerusalem, against Judah, and against all the
nations, from the day of my speaking to you, from the days of Josiah king of Judah,
even to this day. 3 Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the wicked things which I am
planning to do to them, so that they may turn away from their evil way, and I will be
merciful with regard to their wrongdoings and their sins."
4 Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and he wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all
the words of the Lord which he issued to him on a page of a scroll. 5 Jeremiah
commanded Baruch, saying, "I am being guarded; I cannot enter the house of the
Lord. 6 You will read this page in the ears of the people in the house of the Lord on the
day of the fast; in the ears of all Judah, of those who are coming out of their city, you
will read to them. 7 Perhaps their mercy will fall in front of the Lord, and they will turn
away from their evil way, for the anger and the wrath of the Lord, which he spoke
against this people, is great." 8 Baruch did according to everything which Jeremiah
commanded him by reading in the scroll the words of the Lord in the house of the Lord.
9 It happened that, in the eighth year of King Jehoiakim, in the ninth month, all the
people in Jerusalem and the house of Judah assembled for a fast in front of the Lord.
10 Baruch read in the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord, in the house
of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper courtyard, in the threshold of the
new gate of the house of the Lord, in the ears of all the people.
11 Michaiah son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the Lord
from the scroll. 12 He went down to the house of the king, to the house of the scribe.
Behold, all the rulers were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah,
Jonathan B son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all
the rulers. 13 Michaiah told them all the words which he heard Baruch reading in the
ears of the people. 14 All the rulers sent forth Jehudi son of Nethaniah, the son of
Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch son of Neriah, saying, "As for the page which
you read in the ears of the people, take it in your hand and come forward." Baruch took
the page and went down to them. 15 They said to him, "Read it again in our ears," and
Baruch read it. 16 It happened that, when they heard all the words, each took counsel
with his neighbor and said, "Let us tell all these words to the king." 17 They asked
Baruch, saying, "Where did you write all these words?" 18 Baruch said, "Jeremiah told
me all these words from his mouth, and I wrote them in a scroll." 19 They said to
Baruch, "Proceed; you and Jeremiah hide. Let no man know where you are." 20 They
came in to the king in the courtyard and gave the page for preserving in the house of
Elishama; they told the king all these words.
21 The king sent forth Jehudi to take the page, and he took it out of the house of
