will disperse Egypt into the nations and scatter them into the countries, and all of them
will know that I am the Lord.´"
Ezekiel 31
1 It happened that, in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the
month, the word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 2 "Son of man, say to the
Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and to his multitude: `To whom did you compare yourself
in your height? 3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cypress in Lebanon, beautiful in
appendages and high in stature; his rule was in the midst of the clouds. 4 The water
nourished him; the abyss exalted him; it led its rivers around his plants and sent forth
its accumulations into all the trees of the plain. 5 On account of this, his stature was
exalted beyond all the trees of the plain and his branches spread out A due to much
water. 6 All the birds of heaven nested in his appendages, and all the beasts of the field
conceived underneath his branches; all the multitude of nations resided in his shade.
7 He was beautiful in his height because of the multitude of his branches, for his roots
were in much water. 8 Such cypresses were not B in the paradise of God; there were no
pines similar to his appendages, and there were no firs similar to his branches. No tree
in the paradise of God was comparable to him in his beauty 9 because of the multitude
of his branches, and the trees of God's paradise of luxury were jealous of him.´
10 Because of this, thus says the Lord: `Since you became great in stature and gave
your rule in the midst of the clouds (and I saw when he was exalted), 11 I delivered him
up into the hands of the ruler of the nations, and he produced his destruction.
12 Pestilent strangers from the nations eliminated him and threw him down on the
mountains; his branches fell in all the valleys, and his boughs broke in every plain of
the land. All the peoples of the nations went down from their shelter and laid him low.
13 All the birds of heaven halted at his fall, and all the beasts of the field were over his
boughs, 14 so that none of the trees which were by the water might be exalted in their
stature; they did not give their rule in the midst of the clouds. None of those who drank
water stood with them in their height; all were given to death, to the depth of the
earth, in the midst of the sons of men with who are going down into the hole.´
15 Thus says the Lord, the Lord: `On the day he went down to Hades, the abyss
grieved for him. I stopped its floods and prevented an abundance of water. Lebanon
was darkened over him; C all the trees of the plain broke down over him. 16 Due to the
sound of his fall, the nations shook when I brought him down to Hades with those who
are going down into the pit. All the trees of luxury and the choice of plants of Lebanon,
all who drink water, were comforting him in the land. 17 For they went down with him to
Hades among those who were wounded due to the sword. His seed, those who resided
