plunder, he has engaged in opposition in the midst of my people, and will die in his
wrongdoing.
19 You will say, `Why is it that the son did not receive the wrongdoing of his father?´
Because the son performed righteousness and mercy, and maintained all my
regulations and performed them; he will live the life. 20 But the soul which sins will die.
The son will not receive the wrongdoing of his father, and the father will not receive the
wrongdoing of his son. The righteousness of one who is righteous will be upon him, and
the lawlessness of one who is lawless will be upon him. 21 If the one who is lawless
turns away from all his lawless acts which he performed, preserves all my
commandments, and performs righteousness and mercy, he will live the life; he will not
die. 22 None of his trespasses which he performed will be remembered; he will live in his
righteousness which he performed. 23 Do I want the death of the one who is lawless,"
says the Lord, "as I want for him to turn from his evil way, and for him to live? 24 But
when one who is righteous turns away from his righteousness and performs
wrongdoing according to all the lawless acts which the one who is lawless performed,
none of his righteous acts which he performed will be remembered. In his trespass by
which he trespassed and in his sins by which he sinned, in them he will die.
25 You said, `The way of the Lord is not straight.´ Hear now, all you house of Israel:
is my way not straight? Is not your way not straight? 26 When one who is righteous
turns away from his righteousness, performs a trespass, and dies in the trespass which
he performed, he will die in it. 27 When one who is lawless turned away from his
lawlessness which he performed and performed justice and righteousness, this one
preserved his soul. 28 He turned away from all his ungodly acts which he performed. He
will live the life; he will not die. 29 The house of Israel says, `The way of the Lord is not
upright.´ Is my way not upright, O house of Israel? Is not your way not upright? 30 I will
judge you, O house of Israel, each according to his way," says the Lord. "Return and
turn away from all your ungodly acts, and they will not result in the punishment of
wrongdoing for you. 31 Throw away from yourselves all your ungodly acts by which you
became ungodly against me, and make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.
Why are you dying, O house of Israel? 32 For I do not want the death of the one who is
dying," says the Lord. A

1 "Take up a lamentation over the ruler of Israel; 2 you will say, `What is your
mother? She became a cub in the midst of lions; in the midst of lions she multiplied her
cubs. 3 One of her cubs ran away, became a lion, and learned to seize prey; he ate men.
4 Nations heard about him; he was caught in their ruin, and they brought him into the
land of Egypt in a muzzle. 5 She saw that he was driven away from her, and her
steadfastness perished. She took another of her cubs; she arranged for him to be a
lion. 6 He went about in the midst of lions, became a lion, and learned to seize prey; he
ate men. 7 He was feeding in his rashness; he made their cities desolate, and obliterated
the land and its fullness due to the sound of his roaring. 8 They put nations over him
