Judah. 21 Now hear these things, O foolish and heartless people. They have eyes, yet do
not see; they have ears, yet do not hear. 22 Won't you fear me?" says the Lord, "or
won't you be reverent due to my presence, the one who arranges sand as a border for
the sea, as an eternal ordinance, and it will not go beyond it? It will be disturbed, yet
will not able; its waves will resound, yet will not go beyond it. 23 But this people has an
inattentive and distrusting heart; they turned away and went back. 24 They did not say
in their hearts, `Let us now fear the Lord our God, who gives us the early and later rain
according to the season of the fulfillment of the ordinance of the harvest, and he
preserved it for us.´ 25 Your lawless acts turned away these things, and your sins
removed the good things from you. 26 For the ungodly were found among my people;
they set traps to bring men to ruin, and they caught them. 27 As a trap after being set is
full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit. Because of this, they became great and
wealthy. 28 They transgressed justice; they were not executing the justice of the orphan,
and they did not execute the justice of the widow. 29 Won't I conduct an inspection of
these things?" says the Lord, "or won't my soul take vengeance on such a nation as
this?
30 Astonishment and horrors occurred over the land. 31 The prophets prophesied
unrighteous things, and the priests clapped their hands. My people loved in this way;
what will you do for the things after these?"
Jeremiah 6
1 Be strong, O sons of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem; signal with a trumpet
in Tekoa, and set up a sign over Beth-haccerem. For wicked things popped up from the
north, and a great crushing is about to occur. 2 Your height, O daughter of Zion, will be
taken away. 3 Shepherds and their flocks will reach her; they will pitch their tents
against her in a circle, and each will shepherd with his hand. 4 Make arrangements for
battle against her. Arise; let us go up against her at noon. Woe to us! For the day has
declined, for the shadows of the day A are growing faint. 5 Arise; let us go up during the
night and ruin her foundations. 6 For thus says the Lord: "Cut down her trees; pour out
a force against Jerusalem. O false city, there is complete overpowering in her. 7 As a
cistern cools water, so her wickedness cools her; ungodliness and misery will be heard
in her, before her face continually. 8 You will be disciplined with labor and the whip, O
Jerusalem, so that my soul may not depart from you, so that I may not make you an
impassable land which will not be inhabited." 9 For thus says the Lord: "Glean; glean the
remnants of Israel like a vine. Return like the grape gatherer to his basket. 10 To whom
will I speak and testify, and he will listen? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and
they are not able to listen. Behold, the word of the Lord became a reproach for them;
they will not want to listen to it. B 11 I filled up my anger, yet I held back and did not
finish them off. I will pour it out on the infants outside and on the congregation of
young men together. For man and woman will be taken together, the old man with
fullness of days. 12 Their houses will be turned over to others, their fields and wives at
