and their rising up; look at their eyes! 64 TAV: You will pay them back with a repayment,
O Lord, according to the works of their hands. 65 You will pay them back with a shield,
with distress of the heart. 66 You will pursue them with wrath and exterminate them
under heaven, O Lord.
Lamentations 4
1 ALEPH: How gold will be tarnished and good silver will be changed! The holy stones
were poured out at the beginning of all the exits. 2 BETH: The precious sons of Zion who
were excited by gold, how they were reckoned as ceramic vessels, works of the hands
of a potter! 3 GIMEL: Even dragons bared their breasts; they nursed their offspring. The
daughters of my people are in an incurable condition, like an ostrich in a desert.
4 DALETH: The tongue of the one who was nursing was glued to its throat in thirst. The
infants asked for bread; there is no one who breaks it for them. 5 HE: Those who eat
delicacies disappeared in the exits; those who were nursed in scarlet were dressed in
dung. 6 VAV: The lawlessness of the daughter of my people was magnified beyond the
lawless acts of Sodom, which was overthrown as in haste; they did not busy their hands
with her. 7 ZAYIN: Her Nazirites were made purer than snow; they shone brighter than
milk; they were reddened more than stones of sapphire in their order. 8 CHETH: Their
appearance became darker than smoke; they were not recognized in the exits. Their
skin stuck to their bones. They withered; they became like wood. 9 TETH: The ones
wounded by a sword were better than the ones wounded by hunger; after being
stabbed, they went away from the produce of the fields. 10 YOD: The hands of
compassionate women boiled their children; they became food for them in the
shattering of the daughter of my people. 11 KAPH: The Lord accomplished his fury; he
poured out the fury of his wrath. He kindled a fire in Zion, and it devoured her
foundations. 12 LAMED: The kings of the earth, all who reside in the inhabited world, did
not believe that an enemy and oppressor would enter through the gates of Jerusalem.
13 MEM: It was the result of the sins of her prophets, the unjust acts of her priests,
those who poured out righteous blood in her midst. 14 NUN: Her watchmen were shaken
in the exits. They were defiled with blood; when they could do nothing, they touched
their garments. 15 SAMECH: Stay away from unclean things. Summon them: "Stay away!
Stay away! Do not touch!" For they were ignited, and indeed they were shaken. Say
among the nations, "They will not continue to sojourn." 16 AYIN: The face of the Lord
was their portion; he will not continue to look at them. They did not receive the face of
the priests; they did not show mercy to the elderly. 17 PE: While we still existed, our
eyes failed with respect to our help. TSADE: While we were looking at vain things, we
looked to a nation which did not save. 18 We hunted for our little ones, so that they
might not walk in our streets. QOPH: Our season drew near; our days were fulfilled; our
season is present. 19 Those who pursue us were lighter than the eagles of heaven. They
clung to the mountains; in the desert they lay in wait for us. 20 RESH: The spirit of our
face, the anointed Lord, A was captured in their corruptions, the one of whom we said,
"In his shadow we will live among the nations." 21 SHIN: Rejoice and be cheerful, O
A Or, "Christ the Lord"
