for themselves, so that they might be destroyed. 5 Throw away your calf, O Samaria; my
anger was provoked against them. How long will they be unable to be cleansed in
Israel? 6 The craftsman made it; it is not God. For your calf, O Samaria, was one who
deceives. 7 For they sowed blighted seed, and their destruction will await these things. A
sheaf does not have strength to produce meal; even if it should produce it, strangers
will devour it. 8 Israel was swallowed up; now he has become among the nations like a
useless vessel, 9 because they went up to the Assyrians. Ephraim sprouted up against
himself; they loved gifts. 10 Because of this, they will be delivered up among the nations.
Now I will receive them, and they will cease for a little while to anoint a king and rulers.
11 Because Ephraim multiplied altars, beloved altars became sins to him. 12 I will
record a multitude for him, including his regulations; the beloved altars were reckoned
as strange things. 13 For if they offer a sacrifice and eat meat, the Lord will not accept
these things. Now he will remember their wrongdoings and will take vengeance on their
sins. They returned to Egypt, and they will eat unclean things among the Assyrians.
14 Israel forgot the one who made him; they built dedicated precincts, and Judah
multiplied walled cities. I will send out fire for his cities, and it will devour their
foundations.
Hosea 9
1 Do not rejoice, O Israel, and do not be cheerful like the peoples, for you engaged in
prostitution away from your God; you loved gifts on every threshing floor of grain. 2 The
threshing floor and wine press did not know them, and the wine lied to them. 3 They did
not reside in the land of the Lord; Ephraim resided in Egypt, and they will eat unclean
things among the Assyrians. 4 They did not offer a libation of wine to the Lord, and they
did not provide seasoning for him; their sacrifices were like the bread of mourning for
them. All who eat them will be defiled, because their bread for their souls will not enter
into the house of the Lord. 5 What will you do on the day of the festival and on the day
of the feast of the Lord? 6 Because of this, behold, they will go from the trouble of
Egypt; Memphis will receive them, and Michmash will bury them. Destruction will inherit
their silver; thorns will be in their tents.
7 The days of vengeance have come; the days of your recompense have come. Israel
will be afflicted like the prophet who is deranged, a man who is possessed; your
madness was multiplied by the multitude of your wrongdoings. 8 The watchman of
Ephraim was with God, a prophet, yet a crooked snare in all his ways; they established
madness in the house of the Lord. 9 They were corrupted according to the days of the
hill. He will remember their wrongdoings; he will take vengeance on their sins.
10 I found Israel like a bunch of grapes in the desert, and I saw their fathers like an
early watchman in a fig tree. They entered Baal Peor and were alienated in shame; the
beloved became like the abominable. 11 Ephraim flew away like a bird; their glories are
from births, labor pains, and conceptions. 12 For even if they nurture their children, they
will be barren as a result of men, for it is even a woe to them that my flesh is from
them. 13 Ephraim, in the manner that I saw, presented their children as prey, in order
for Ephraim to bring out his children for killing. 14 Give it to them, O Lord. What will you
give to them? Give to them a barren womb and dry breasts.
