sinners, the yoke of the rulers. 6 After he attacked the nation in anger with an incurable
plague, after he struck a nation with an angry plague which did not spare them, 7 he
rested in confidence. All the earth cries out with cheerfulness. 8 The trees of Lebanon
were cheerful over you, including the cedar of Lebanon: `Since you have fallen asleep,
no one came up who would cut us down.´ 9 From below, Hades was provoked to meet
you. All the giants who ruled the earth, who aroused all the kings of the nations from
their thrones, were aroused together against you. 10 Everyone will reply and say to you,
`You too were seized, just as we were, and you were counted among us. 11 Your glory
descended to Hades, your great cheerfulness; underneath you they will spread
putrefaction, and a worm will be your covering.´ 12 How did the morning star A which
rose at dawn fall out of heaven! The one who sends forth to all the nations was crushed
into the earth. 13 You said in your mind, `I will ascend into heaven; I will place my
throne above the stars of heaven. I will sit on a high mountain, on the high mountains
which are toward the north. 14 I will ascend above the clouds; I will be similar to the
Most High.´ 15 But now you will descend to Hades, even to the foundations of the earth.
16 Those who see you will be amazed at you, and they will say, `This is the man who
irritated the earth, who made kings shake, 17 who made the entire inhabited world a
desert and devastated its cities; he did not set free those who were in misery.´ 18 All the
kings of the nations fell asleep in honor, each man in his house, 19 but you will be
thrown away on the mountains like a loathsome dead body along with many who have
died, who have been pierced with swords, who are descending into Hades. As a
garment stained with blood will not be clean, 20 so neither will you be clean, for you
destroyed my land and killed my people. You, the evil seed, will not remain forever.
21 Prepare your children to be slaughtered by the sins of your father, so that they may
not arise and inherit the earth, and fill the earth with wars." B
22 "I will rise up against them," says the Lord of sabaóth, "and I will destroy their
name, remnant, and seed." Thus says the Lord: 23 "I will make Babylonia a desert, so
that hedgehogs may reside there, and it will be as nothing. I will make it a pit of mud
for destruction." 24 Thus says the Lord of sabaóth: "As I have said, so it will be, and as I
have proposed, so it will remain: 25 to destroy the Assyrians from my land and from my
mountains. They will exist for trampling; their yoke will be taken away from them, and
their renown will be taken away from their shoulders." 26 This is the counsel which the
Lord has offered against the entire inhabited world, and this is the upraised hand which
is against all the nations of the inhabited world. 27 For who will frustrate the things
which God, the Holy One, has proposed? Who will turn away the upraised hand?
28 In the year in which Ahaz the king died, this word came: 29 "Do not rejoice, all you
Philistines, because the yoke of the one who struck you was broken. For out of the seed
of serpents will come the offspring of asps, and their offspring will come out as flying
serpents. 30 The poor will be fed by it, and poor men will rest in peace, but it will
A eósphoros, "dawn bringer," was an epithet of the planet Venus; the traditional
association of its Latin translation lucifer with Satan is unwarranted, since in context it
clearly refers to Babylon (v. 4)
