LAMENTATIONS 1 It happened that, after Israel was taken captive and Jerusalem became desolate, Jeremiah sat weeping, and he lamented with this lamentation over Jerusalem. He said: 1 ALEPH: How did the city which was filled with peoples sit alone! She became like a widow; she who was multiplied among nations and ruling among countries became tribute. 2 BETH: She wept during the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; there is no one who comforts her from all those who love her. All those who were befriending her dealt treacherously with her; they became her enemies. 3 GIMEL: Judea was deported due to her humiliation and due to the abundance of her slavery. She sat among nations; she did not find rest. All those who were pursuing her overtook her between those who were oppressing. 4 DALETH: The roads of Zion are mourning because none are coming during the feast. All her gates are obliterated; her priests are groaning. Her virgins are being led away, and she is embittered within herself. 5 HE: Those who were oppressing her became the head, and her enemies were prospering, for the Lord humiliated her based on the multitude of her ungodly acts. Her infants went into captivity before the face of one who was oppressing. 6 VAV: All her splendor was taken away from the daughter of Zion. Her rulers became like rams who were not finding pasture, and they went without strength before the face of one who was pursuing. 7 ZAYIN: Jerusalem remembered the days of her humiliation and her rejections, all her coveted things which were from days of old, when her people fell into the hands of one who was oppressing, and there was no one who was helping her. When her enemies saw it, they laughed at her deportation. A 8 CHETH: Jerusalem committed sin; because of this, she became unstable. All those who were glorifying her humiliated her, for they saw her shame. Indeed, she herself groaned and turned away. 9 TETH: Her uncleanness is at her feet; she did not remember her ends. She brought down excessive things; there is no one who is comforting her. See, O Lord, my humiliation, for the enemy was magnified. 10 YOD: One who was oppressing stretched out his hand over all her coveted things, for she saw nations entering her sacred place, which you commanded not to enter your assembly. 11 KAPH: All her people were groaning as they were seeking bread; they gave her coveted things for food to restore a soul. See, O Lord, and look, for I became dishonored. B 12 LAMED: Is it nothing to you, all of you who are passing along the road?
