holy A to the Lord as the beginning of his produce. All those who eat him will be in error;
wicked things will come upon them,´ says the Lord."
4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob and every family of the house of
Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord: "What error did your fathers find in me, that they stood far
away from me, went after vanities, and became vain? 6 They did not say, `Where is the
Lord who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who guided us in the desert in a
boundless and impassable land, in a waterless and unfruitful land, in a land in which no
man B passed through and the son of man C did not reside there?´ 7 I brought you to
Carmel for you to eat its fruits and its good things; you entered and defiled my land,
and made my inheritance into an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, `Where is the
Lord?´ Those who laid claim to the law did not understand me. The shepherds were
ungodly toward me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal; they went after what was
not beneficial.
9 Because of this, I will still plead with you," says the Lord, "and I will plead with the
sons of your sons. 10 Indeed, pass through to the islands of the Kittim and look; send
forth to Kedar and observe exceedingly, and see if such things have happened, 11 if the
nations will change their gods. And these are not gods! My people changed their glory
for that by which they will not be benefited. 12 Heaven was astonished over this and
shuddered exceedingly more," says the Lord. 13 "For my people performed two evils:
they abandoned me, the spring of the water of life, and they dug for themselves broken
cisterns, which will not be able to hold water.
14 Israel is not a slave or a house servant, is he? Why did he become a spoil? 15 Lions
roared against him and issued their sound, which arranged his land as a desert; his
cities were razed so as not to be inhabited. 16 The sons of Memphis and Tahpanhes
knew you and mocked you. 17 Did not your abandoning me do these things to you?"
says the Lord your God. 18 "Now what do you have in common with the way of Egypt, to
drink the water of the Gihon? What do you have in common with the way of the
Assyrians, to drink the water of the rivers? 19 Your apostasy will discipline you and your
wickedness will reprove you. Know and see that your abandoning me is bitter for you,"
says the Lord your God. "I did not approve of you," says the Lord your God.
20 "For from eternity, you broke your yoke and ripped apart your bonds. You said, `I
will not serve, but will go on every high hill and under every shady tree; there I will
indulge in my prostitution.´ 21 I planted you as a fruitful vine, entirely true. How did you
turn to bitterness, a strange vine? 22 Even if you wash with soda and multiply herbs for
yourself, you have been stained by your unjust acts before me," says the Lord. 23 "How
will you say, `I was not defiled, and I did not go after Baal´? See your ways in the
cemetery and know what you did. Her voice howled in the evening. 24 She widened her
ways over the waters of a desert; she was inspired by the covetous acts of her soul.
She was delivered up; who will return back? None of those who seek her will grow
A Since Israel, like many Hebrew names, is not inflected in Greek texts, agios Israel can
be translated both "the Holy One of Israel" (v. 2) and "Israel was holy" (v. 3)
