13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the governors of the force who were in the fields
came to Gedaliah at Mizpah; 14 they said to him, "Do you have knowledge that Baalis,
the king of the sons of Ammon, sent forth Ishmael to you in order to attack your soul?"
Gedaliah did not believe them. 15 Johanan said to Gedaliah secretly in Mizpah, "I will
now go and attack Ishmael. Let no one know, so that he may not attack your soul, and
all Judah, those who are gathered to you, be dispersed and the remnants of Judah
perish." 16 Gedaliah said to Johanan, "Do not do this thing, for you are telling lies about
Ishmael."
Jeremiah 48 A
1 In the seventh month, it happened that Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of
Elishama, from the race of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedaliah at
Mizpah. There they ate bread together. 2 Ishmael and the ten men who were with him
arose and attacked Gedaliah, whom the king of Babylon installed over the land, 3 all the
Judeans who were with him in Mizpah, and all the Chaldeans who were found there.
4 It happened that, on the second day after he attacked Gedaliah (and no man knew
it), 5 men came from Shechem, from Salem, and from Samaria, eighty men who had
shaved their beards, torn their garments, and were mourning. Manna and frankincense
were in their hands to bring into the house of the Lord. 6 Ishmael came out to meet
them; they were going and weeping. He said to them, "Come in to Gedaliah." 7 It
happened that, when they came in to the midst of the city, he slaughtered them into a
well. 8 Ten men were found there; they said to Ishmael, "Do not slay us, for we have
treasures in the field, wheat and barley, honey and oil." He passed by and did not slay
them in the midst of their brothers. 9 The well into which Ishmael threw everyone whom
he attacked there, this is the great well which King Asa made due to the presence of
Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael filled this with the wounded. 10 Ishmael returned all the
people who were left in Mizpah, including the daughters of the king whom the chief
butcher entrusted to Gedaliah son of Ahikam. He departed beyond the sons of Ammon.
11 Johanan son of Kareah and all the governors of the force who were with him
heard all the wicked things which Ishmael did. 12 They brought all their army and
departed to battle him; they found him by much water in Gibeon. 13 It happened that,
when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan and the governors of the
force which was with him, 14 they returned to Johanan. 15 Ishmael was saved together
with eight men, and he departed to the sons of Ammon.
16 Johanan and all the governors of the force who were with him took all the
remnants of the people whom he returned from Ishmael: men powerful in battle, the
wives, the remaining things, B and the eunuchs whom they returned from Gibeon.
17 They departed and sat in Geruth Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, in order to go to
enter Egypt 18 due to the presence of the Chaldeans, for they were afraid due to their
presence, for Ishmael attacked Gedaliah, whom the king of Babylon installed in the
land.
