and prevail. 8 Indeed, he will overthrow their gods along with their molten objects; he
will bring to Egypt A every coveted silver and gold vessel of theirs along with a body of
captives. He will remain standing longer than the king of the north. 9 He will enter into
the kingdom of the king of the south, and will return to his own land.
10 His sons will gather a crowd of many forces. It will keep coming and
overwhelming; it will pass by, swoop down, and contend to the limit of its strength.
11 The king of the south will be enraged; he will come out and battle with the king of the
north. He will establish a large crowd, and a crowd will be delivered up by his hand.
12 He will receive the crowd, and his heart will be exalted; he will cast down tens of
thousands, yet he will not prevail. 13 The king of the north will return and lead a crowd
larger than the former, and at the end of the seasons of years he will come against the
entrances with a great force and with much equipment.
14 In those seasons many will rise up against the king of the south. The sons of the
scoundrels of your people will be lifted up in order to establish a vision, yet they will
grow weak. 15 The king of the north will enter, deposit a siege mound, and capture
secure cities. The arms of the king of the south will not remain standing. B His chosen
ones will arise, yet there will be no strength to stand. 16 The one who comes in against
him will act according to his will, and there is no one who will stand before his face. He
will stand in the land of sabi, C and it will be finished by his hand. 17 He will arrange his
face to enter with the strength of all his kingdom, and will cause everything to be in line
with him. He will give him a daughter of women in order to corrupt her, yet she will not
remain, neither will she be his. 18 He will turn his face back to the islands and will
capture many. He will inflame rulers with their reproach; D nevertheless, his own
reproach will return on him. 19 He will turn his face back to the strength of his land. He
will grow weak, fall, and not be found.
20 A plant of the kingdom will arise out of his root, pushing aside his preparation,
earning the glory of the kingdom. In those days he will be crushed, yet not in public E
nor in battle. 21 He will remain standing over his preparation (he was treated with
contempt, and they did not give him the glory of the kingdom). He will come in
prosperity, and prevail over the kingdom by slippery acts. 22 The arms of the one who
overwhelms will be overwhelmed due to his presence and will be crushed, as will the
governor of the testament. 23 Due to the alliances with him, he will practice deceit; he
will go up and prevail over him with a small nation. 24 He will be present in prosperity
and in fertile regions. He will do what his fathers and the fathers of his fathers did not
do: he will scatter plunder, spoils, and possessions for them. He will also devise his
plans against Egypt for a season. 25 His strength and his heart will be aroused against
the king of the south with a great force. The king of the south will join in battle with a
