to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of heaven. 6 All those who reside in Egypt will
know that I am the Lord, since you became a reed staff to the house of Israel. 7 When
they seized you with their hand, you broke, and when every hand prevailed against
them and when they came to rest on you, you were shattered, and you crushed every
loin of them." 8 Because of this, thus says the Lord: "Behold, I am bringing a sword
against you, and I will destroy men and livestock from you. 9 The land of Egypt will be a
destruction and a desert; they will know that I am the Lord, in return for your saying,
`The rivers are mine, and I myself made them.´ 10 Because of this, behold, I am against
you and against all your rivers. I will give the land of Egypt to the desert, the sword,
and destruction, from Migdol and Syene to the borders of the Ethiopians. 11 A foot of a
man will not pass through her, and a foot of livestock will not pass through her; she will
not be inhabited for forty years. 12 I will give her land destruction in the midst of a
deserted land, and her cities will be in the midst of deserted cities for forty years. I will
disperse Egypt among the nations, and I will winnow them into the countries."
13 Thus says the Lord: "After forty years, I will gather the Egyptians from the nations
where they were scattered. 14 I will return the captivity of the Egyptians and cause them
to reside in the land of Pathros, in the land from which they were taken. 15 It will be a
humble realm beyond all the realms; it will no longer be exalted over the nations. I will
make them very small, so that they may not be numerous among the nations. 16 They
will no longer be for the house of Israel a hope which recalls lawlessness when they
follow after them; they will know that I am the Lord."´"
17 It happened that, in the twenty-seventh year, on the first of the first month, the
word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 18 "Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of
Babylon reduced his force to great slavery against Tyre. Every head was bald and every
shoulder was scuffed, yet there was no reward for him and his force against Tyre, not
even for the slavery which they served against her." 19 Thus says the Lord, the Lord:
"Behold, I am giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. A He will take
her plunder and seize her spoils; it will be a reward for his force. 20 In return for his
public service which he served against Tyre, I have given him the land of Egypt." Thus
says the Lord, the Lord: 21 "On that day a horn will spring up for all the house of Israel,
and I will give you an open mouth in their midst; they will know that I am the Lord."
1 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 2 "Son of man, prophesy and say,
`Thus says the Lord: "Woe, woe is the day! 3 For the day of the Lord is near, a day
which will be the end of nations. B 4 A sword will arrive over the Egyptians, and there will
fall together. 5 Persians, Cretans, Lydians, Libyans, and all those in union with the sons
of my testament will fall in her by the sword. 6 The supports of Egypt will fall; the
