11 It happened that, when the force of the Chaldeans went up from Jerusalem due to
the presence of the force of the Pharaoh, 12 Jeremiah came out from Jerusalem to go
into the land of Benjamin in order to buy from there in the midst of the people. 13 He
was in the gate of Benjamin, and a man was there beside whom he lodged, Zeruiah son
of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah. He seized Jeremiah, saying, "Are you fleeing to the
Chaldeans?" 14 He said, "It is false; I am not fleeing to the Chaldeans." He did not listen
to him, and Zeruiah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the rulers. 15 The rulers were
irritated with Jeremiah; they attacked him and sent him forth into the house of
Jonathan the scribe, for they made this into the house of the prison. 16 Jeremiah came
into the house of the pit and into the chereth, A and he sat there for many days.
17 Zedekiah sent forth and summoned him; the king asked him secretly, saying, "Is
there a word from the Lord?" He said, "There is; you will be delivered up into the hands
of the king of Babylon." 18 Jeremiah said to the king, "How did I wrong you, your
servants, and this people, that you put me into the house of the prison? 19 Where are
your prophets who prophesied to you saying, `The king of Babylon will not come
against this land´? 20 Now, my lord the king, let my mercy fall in front of you. Why are
you returning me to the house of Jonathan the scribe? May I not die there!" 21 The king
gave orders, and they threw him into the house of the prison; they gave him one loaf a
day outside of where they bake, until the bread failed from the city. Jeremiah sat in the
courtyard of the prison.
1 Shephatiah son of Nathan, C Gedaliah son of Pashhur, and Jucal son of Shelemiah
heard the words which Jeremiah was speaking regarding the people, saying, 2 "So said
the Lord: `The one who resides in this city will die by the sword and by famine, and the
one who goes out to the Chaldeans will live; his soul will be for discovery, and he will
live.´ 3 For so said the Lord: `This city will be delivered up into the hands of the force of
the king of Babylon, and they will seize it.´" 4 They said to the king, "Now let that man
be done away with, for he relaxes the hands of the men who are battling, who are left
in the city, and the hands of all the people, speaking to them according to these words.
For this man does not utter oracles of peace to this people, but of evil things instead."
5 The king said, "Behold, he is in your hands," for the king was not able to be against
them. 6 They threw him into the pit of Malchijah, the son of the king, which was in the
courtyard of the prison. They let him down into the pit; in the pit there was no water,
but filth instead, and he was in the filth.
7 Ebed-melech the Ethiopian (he was in the house of the king) heard that they put
Jeremiah into the pit. The king was in the gate of Benjamin, 8 and he came out to him
and spoke to the king; he said, 9 "You engaged in evil by the things which you did, in
