men, I prolonged them with the bonds of my love. I will be to them like a man hitting
another on his cheek. I will stare at him; I will prevail over him.
5 Ephraim resided in Egypt, and Asshur himself was his king, because he did not
want to return. 6 The sword weakened in his cities and ceased in his hands. They will
eat of their own decrees. 7 His people were hanging out of his residence. God will be
furious with his precious things, and will not exalt him.
8 What will I arrange for you, O Ephraim? How will I protect you, O Israel? What will
I arrange for you? I will set you up like Admah and like Zeboiim. My heart turned within
itself; my regret was stirred up. 9 I will not act according to the wrath of my fury; I will
not abandon Ephraim to be wiped out. For I am God and not man, the Holy One among
you, and I will not enter into a city. 10 I will go after the Lord; he will roar like a lion, for
he himself will growl, and the children of the waters will be displaced. 11 They will be
displaced like a bird out of Egypt and like a dove out of the land of the Assyrians. "I will
restore them to their houses," says the Lord.
Hosea 12 A
1 Ephraim surrounded me with falsehood, and the house of Israel and Judah with
ungodly acts. Now God has come to know them, and they will be called the holy people
of God. 2 Ephraim is an evil spirit; he pursued the summer heat the entire day. He
multiplied empty and vain things; he made a testament with the Assyrians, and
imported oil into Egypt. 3 The Lord has a judgment against Judah in order to take
vengeance on Jacob according to his ways, and according to his habits he will repay
him. 4 He grabbed the heel of his brother in the womb, and in his labors he was strong
with God. 5 He was strong with the messenger and was powerful. They wept and
petitioned me; they found me in my house, and there it was spoken to him. B 6 The Lord
God Almighty will be his memorial. 7 You will return with your God; preserve mercy and
justice, and draw near to your God continually.
8 In Canaan's hand is a balance of wrongdoing; he loved to overpower. 9 Ephraim
said, "Nevertheless, I have become rich; I have found refreshment for myself." None of
his labors will be found for him because of the wrongdoings by which he sinned. 10 I
myself, the Lord your God, brought you up out of the land of Egypt. I will still cause you
to reside in tents, just as on the day of the festival. 11 I will speak to the prophets; I
multiplied visions, and by the hands of the prophets I was represented. 12 If there is no
Gilead, then the rulers in Gilead C were false when they were sacrificing, and their altars
were like heaps on the ground of the field. 13 Jacob departed for the plain of Syria;
Israel served for a wife and waited for a wife. 14 The Lord brought Israel out of Egypt by
a prophet, and by a prophet he was preserved. 15 Ephraim was furious and enraged. His
blood will be poured out upon him, and the Lord will repay his reproach to him.
