was given to be with the beasts. His residence was with the wild asses; they fed him
grass like an ox, and his body was bathed by the dew of heaven, until he knew that
God Most High is the Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whomever he
pleases. 22 You, his son Belshazzar, did not humble your heart in the sight of God; did
you not know all these things? 23 You were exalted over the Lord God of heaven; they
brought before you the vessels of his house, and you, your great men, your concubines,
and your consorts drank wine with them. You praised gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood,
and stone gods, which do not see, do not hear, and do not know, and you did not
glorify the God in whose hand is your breath and all your ways. 24 Because of this, from
his presence was sent forth the knuckle of a hand; he arranged this writing. 25 This is
the writing which has been arranged: Mene, Tekel, Peres. 26 This is the interpretation of
the word. Mene: God measured your kingdom and filled it. 27 Tekel: it was placed in a
balance and found lacking. 28 Peres: your kingdom has been divided and given to the
Medes and Persians."
29 Belshazzar said so, and they dressed Daniel in purple and put the gold chain
around his neck; he proclaimed concerning him that he was the third ruler in the
kingdom. 30 On the same night, Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.
Daniel 6 A
1 Darius the Mede received the kingdom when he was sixty-two years old. 2 It was
pleasing before Darius, and he installed over the kingdom one hundred twenty satraps,
for them to be in his entire kingdom, 3 and over them three regulators, one of whom
was Daniel, for the satraps to give an account to them, so that the king might not be
troubled. 4 Daniel was above them, for an excellent spirit was in him; the king installed
him over his entire kingdom. 5 The regulators and satraps sought to find a pretext
against Daniel; they did not find against him any pretext, trespass, and fault, for he was
faithful. 6 The regulators said, "We will not find a pretext against Daniel, except in the
regulations of his God." 7 Then the regulators and satraps stood beside the king and said
to him, "O King Darius, may you live forever! 8 All who are over your kingdom, officers
and satraps, superiors and district rulers, took counsel together to establish and
strengthen a restriction by royal edict, that for thirty days whoever makes a request of
any god and man, except of you, O king, will be thrown into the pit of lions. 9 Now then,
O king, establish the restriction and publish a written version, so that the decree of the
Medes and Persians may not be changed." 10 Then King Darius ordered the decree to be
written.
11 When Daniel knew that the decree was enacted, he entered his house. The
windows in his upper rooms were open to him facing Jerusalem; on three occasions of
the day he would get down on his knees, pray, and make an acknowledgment before
his God, just as he would do before. 12 Then these men watched closely and found
Daniel supplicating and petitioning his God. 13 They approached and said to the king, "O
king, did you not post the restriction that for thirty days any man who makes a request
of any god and man, except of you, O king, will be thrown into the pit of lions?" The
