killing this man due to the presence of the famine, for there is no longer any bread in
the city." 10 The king commanded Ebed-melech, saying, "Take into your hands thirty
men from here, and bring him up out of the pit so that he may not die." 11 Ebed-melech
took the men and entered the underground part of the house of the king; he took old
rags and old ropes from there and threw them to Jeremiah in the pit. 12 He said, "Place
these under the ropes," and Jeremiah did so. 13 They pulled him with the ropes and
brought him up out of the pit. Jeremiah sat in the courtyard of the prison.
14 The king sent forth and summoned him to himself in the house of Hashelishel, A
which was in the house of the Lord. The king said to him, "I will ask you about an
issue; now do not hide a word from me." 15 Jeremiah said to the king, "If I tell you,
won't you put me to death? If I advise you, you will not listen to me." 16 The king swore
to him, saying, "As the Lord lives who made this soul for us, I will not kill you, and I will
not give you into the hands of these men."
17 Jeremiah said to him, "So said the Lord: `If you come out to the governors of the
king of Babylon, your soul will live, and this city will not be burned with fire. You and
your house will live. 18 If you do not come out, this city will be given into the hands of
the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you will not be saved.´" 19 The king
said to Jeremiah, "I have an issue regarding the Judeans who have fled to the
Chaldeans, for them not to give me into their hands, and they will mock me."
20 Jeremiah said, "They will not deliver you up. Hear the word of the Lord which I am
saying to you; it will be better for you, and your soul will live. 21 If you do not want to
come out, this is the word which the Lord showed me. 22 Behold, all the women who are
left in the house of the king of Judah were led out to the rulers of the king of Babylon;
they said, `Your peaceful men deceived you, and they will overpower you. They will
cause your feet to break loose in a landslide; they turned away from you.´ 23 They will
lead out your wives and your children to the Chaldeans, and you will not be saved, for
you will be seized by the hand of the king of Babylon, and this city will be burned."
24 The king said to him, "Let no man know any of these words, and you will not die.
25 If the rulers hear that I spoke to you, and they come to you and say to you, `Tell us,
what did the king speak to you? Do not hide it from us, and we will not slay you. What
did the king speak to you?´ 26 you will say to them, `I threw my mercy before the eyes
of the king, in order for him not to return me to the house of Jonathan to die there.´"
27 All the rulers came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he reported to them according to
all these words which the king commanded to him. They were silent, for the word of
the Lord was not heard. 28 Jeremiah sat in the courtyard of the prison until the time
when Jerusalem was seized.
