against it without the Lord?"´" B
11 Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to him, "Speak to your servants in the Syriac
language, for we understand it, and do not speak to us in the Jewish language. Why do
you speak in the ears of the men who are on the wall?" 12 The Rabshakeh said to them,
"Has my lord sent me forth to speak these words to your lord or to you? Has he not
sent me forth to the men who sit on the wall, so that they may eat dung and drink
urine together with you?"
13 The Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language; he said,
"Listen to the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians. 14 Thus says the king:
`Do not let Hezekiah deceive you with words, which will not be able to deliver you. 15 Do
not let Hezekiah say to you that God will deliver you and this city will not be delivered
the king of the Assyrians: `If you wish to be blessed, go out to me, and each of you will
Jerusalem out of my hand?´" 21 They were silent; no one answered him with a word,
because the king ordered no one to answer.
22 Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the manager, and Shebna the scribe of the force, and Joah
son of Asaph, the recorder, came in to Hezekiah after they tore their tunics, and they
reported to him the words of the Rabshakeh.
Isaiah 37
1 It happened that, when king Hezekiah heard, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth,
and went up to the house of the Lord. 2 He sent forth Eliakim the manager, and Shebna
the scribe, and the elders of the priests clothed with sackcloth, to Isaiah son of Amos,
the prophet. 3 They said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah: `Today is a day of oppression,
reproach, rebuke, and wrath, for labor pain has come upon the woman who will give
birth, but she does not have strength to give birth. 4 May the Lord your God listen to the
words of the Rabshakeh, which the king of the Assyrians sent forth to reproach the
living God and to reproach by the words which the Lord your God heard. You will pray
to your Lord concerning these who are left.´" 5 The servants of the king came to Isaiah.
6 Isaiah said to them, "You will say this to your lord, `Thus says the Lord: "Do not be
