JOEL 1
1 The word of the Lord which was directed at Joel, the son of Bethuel. A
2 Hear these things, you elders, and listen, all of you who reside on the land. Surely
such things have not happened in your days or in the days of your fathers! 3 Give a
description concerning them to your children, and your children to their children, and
their children for another generation.
4 The locust ate the leavings of the grasshopper, the caterpillar ate the leavings of
the locust, and the fungus ate the leavings of the caterpillar. 5 Sober up from your wine,
you who are intoxicated, and weep; lament, all of you who drink wine to intoxication,
for cheerfulness and joy were removed from your mouths. 6 For a strong and
immeasurable nation came up against my land. Its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and its
molars are those of a cub. 7 It set up my vine for obliteration and my fig trees for
mangling. It examined and re-examined it, and laid it waste; it peeled its branches.
8 Lament to me more than a bride girded with sackcloth for the husband of her
virginity. 9 Sacrifice and drink offering were removed from the house of the Lord. Mourn,
you priests who perform service at the altar. 10 For the plains have suffered; let the land
mourn, for the grain has suffered, the wine dried up, the oil became scarce. 11 The
farmers dried up; lament, you properties, regarding the wheat and barley, for the
harvest perished from the field. 12 The vine dried up, and the figs became scarce. The
pomegranate, date, apple, and all the trees of the field dried up, for the sons of men
turned joy into shame.
13 Gird yourselves and grieve, you priests; lament, you who perform service at the
altar; enter, sleep in sackcloth, you who perform service for God, for sacrifice and drink
offering were withheld from the house of your God. 14 Sanctify a fast, proclaim a
ceremony, gather all the elders who reside on the land into the house of your God, and
shout earnestly to the Lord, 15 "Alas for me! Alas for me! Alas for me today!" For the day
of the Lord is near, and it will come like suffering from suffering. 16 Before your eyes,
foods were abolished, as were cheerfulness and joy from the house of your God. 17 The
heifers leaped over their mangers; the treasures were obliterated; the wine presses
were dismantled, for the grain dried up. 18 What will we store for ourselves? The herds
of cattle wept because there was no pasture for them, and the flocks of sheep were
obliterated. 19 To you, O Lord, I will shout, for fire consumed the blooms of the desert,
and a flame burned up all the trees of the field. 20 The livestock of the plain looked up to
you, for the emissions of the waters dried up, and fire devoured the blooms of the
desert.
Joel 2
1 Blow a trumpet in Zion, make a proclamation on my holy mountain, and let all
those who reside on the land be confounded, since the day of the Lord has arrived. 2 For
