Jeremiah 40 A
1 The word of the Lord was directed at Jeremiah a second time; he was still bound in
the courtyard of the prison. He said, 2 "The Lord said this, the one who made the earth
and formed it so as to establish it; the Lord is his name: 3 `Shout to me, and I will
answer you; I will tell you about great and strong things which you did not know.´ 4 For
the Lord God of Israel B said this about the houses of this city and about the houses of
the king of Judah, which have been demolished for ramparts and fortifications 5 in order
to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill her with the dead of men: `I attacked them in
my wrath and in my anger, and I turned my face from them on account of all their
evils. 6 Behold, I am bringing her recovery and healing, C and I will make it evident for
them to hear. I will heal her and make peace and faith for them. 7 I will return the exile
of Judah and the exile of Israel, and I will build them as at first. 8 I will cleanse them
from all their wrongdoings by which they sinned against me, and I will not remember
their sins by which they sinned against me and rebelled against me. 9 This will result in
cheerfulness, praise, and magnificence for all the people of the earth, who will hear all
the good things which I will do. They will be afraid and will be irritated on account of all
the good things and on account of all the peace which I will make for them.´
10 The Lord said this: `In this place, of which you say, "It is deserted by men and
livestock," in the cities of Judah and outside of Jerusalem, which have been deserted
because there is no man and livestock, there will still be heard 11 the voice of
cheerfulness and the voice of joy, the voice of a bridegroom and the voice of a bride,
the voice of those who say, "Acknowledge the almighty Lord, for the Lord is kind, for
his mercy is forever." They will bring gifts into the house of the Lord, for I will return all
the exile of that land as at first,´ said the Lord.
12 The Lord of forces said this: `In this place, which is deserted because there is no
man and livestock, and in all its cities, there will still be lodgings for shepherds who give
rest to sheep. 13 In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, in the
cities of the Negev, in the land of Benjamin, in the areas around Jerusalem, and in the
cities of Judah, sheep will still pass under the hand of the one who counts them,´ said
the Lord."
Jeremiah 41 D
1 The word which was directed at Jeremiah from the Lord (Nebuchadnezzar king of
Babylon, all his army, and all the land of his realm were battling against Jerusalem and
against all the cities of Judah), saying, 2 "So said the Lord: `Proceed to Zedekiah king of
