a day of darkness and gloom is near, a day of cloud and fog. A numerous and strong
people will be spread over the mountains like the dawn. There has not been anyone
similar to them from eternity, and after them there will not be anyone again for years,
for generation after generation. 3 In front of them is a consuming fire, and behind them
is a kindled flame. The land before them is like a paradise of delight, and behind them
is a plain of obliteration, in which no one will be saved for them. 4 Their appearance is
like the sight of horses; they will pursue like horsemen. 5 They will leap like the sound of
chariots on the summits of the mountains, like the sound of a flame of fire devouring
stubble, and like a numerous and strong people lining themselves up for battle. 6 Before
their face, peoples will be crushed; every face will be like the scorching of a pot. 7 They
will run like fighters, and they will go up on the walls like military men. Each one will go
in his way, and they will not turn away from their paths. 8 No one will keep away from
his brother; they will go even while being weighed down with their weapons. They will
fall on their arrows, yet will not be finished off. 9 They will seize the city, run over the
walls, go up over the houses, and enter in through windows like thieves. 10 Before their
face, the earth will be confounded and heaven will be shaken; the sun and the moon
will darken, and the stars will withdraw their illumination. 11 The Lord will issue his voice
before the presence of his force, for his camp is exceedingly large, for the actions of his
words are strong. For the day of the Lord is great, great and exceedingly conspicuous,
and who will be fit for it? 12 "Now," says the Lord your God, "return to me from your
entire hearts with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 tear your hearts and not
your garments." Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate,
patient and full of mercy; he relents concerning wicked things. 14 Who knows if he will
return and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a sacrifice and a drink offering for
the Lord our God? 15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, proclaim a service.
16 Gather the people, sanctify the assembly, select the elders, gather the infants nursing
at the breasts. Let the bridegroom come out of his bedchamber and the bride out of her
closet. 17 Between the porch and the altar, let the priests who perform public service for
the Lord weep and say, "Spare your people, O Lord, and do not grant your inheritance
to be a reproach, resulting in the nations ruling over them, so that they may not say
among the nations, `Where is their God?´"
18 The Lord was zealous for his land and spared his people. 19 The Lord replied and
said to his people, "Behold, I will send out to you grain, wine, and oil, and you will be
satisfied with them. I will no longer grant you to be a reproach among the nations. 20 I
will chase away from you the one from the north, and I will drive him out into a
waterless land; I will obliterate his presence into the former sea and his back parts into
the latter sea. His decay will ascend and his roaring will ascend, because he magnified
his actions.
21 Have courage, O land; rejoice and be cheerful, for the Lord magnified what he was
doing. 22 Have courage, O livestock of the plain, for the plains of the desert have
budded, for the tree bore its fruit; the vine and the fig tree yielded their strength.
23 Rejoice and be cheerful, O children of Zion, over the Lord your God, for he gave you
foods in righteousness, and he will shower on you the early and the late rain, as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain, and the winepresses will overflow with
