21 Go up harshly against it and against those who reside on it. Take vengeance, O
sword, and obliterate," says the Lord. "Act in agreement with everything which I am
commanding you." 22 The sound of battle! Great destruction in the land of the
Chaldeans! 23 How is the hammer of all the earth broken and crushed! How has Babylon
become an obliteration among the nations! 24 They will impose on you; how you will be
captured, O Babylon, and you will not know it! You were found and taken, because you
resisted the Lord. 25 The Lord opened his treasury and brought out the implements of
his anger, for there is work for the Lord God in the land of the Chaldeans, 26 for her
seasons have come. Open her storehouses; search her like a cave. Eliminate her; let
there be no remnant of her. 27 Dry up all her fruits, and let them go down to the
slaughter. Woe to them, for their day and the season of vengeance against them has
arrived. 28 The sound of those who are fleeing and escaping from the land of Babylon, in
order to declare to Zion the vengeance which is from the Lord our God!
29 "Summon many against Babylon, everyone who stretches the bow. Camp all
around against her; do not let anyone of her escape. Render to her according to her
works; do to her according to everything which she did, for she was resistant to the
Lord, the Holy God of Israel. 30 Because of this, her young men will fall in her streets,
and all the men who are her warriors will be thrown down," says the Lord. 31 "Behold, I
am against you, O insolent woman," says the Lord, "for your day and the season of
vengeance against you has arrived. 32 Your insolence will become weak and fall, and
there will be no one who will stand it up. I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it will
devour all the things around her."
33 Thus says the Lord: "The sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have been
overpowered together. Everyone who captured them overpowered them, for they did
not want to send them forth. 34 The one who redeems them is strong; the almighty Lord
is his name. He will render a judgment regarding his adversaries, so that he may do
away with the land. He will provoke those who reside in Babylon 35 with a sword against
the Chaldeans, against those who reside in Babylon, against her great men, and against
her intelligent men; 36 a sword against her fighters (they will be disabled); 37 a sword
against their horses and against their chariots; a sword against their warriors and
against what is mixed together in her midst (they will be like women); a sword against
her treasures (they will be scattered). 38 They will yearn for her water and be ashamed, A
for it is a land of carvings, even among the islands where they boasted. 39 Because of
this, hallucinations will reside in the islands, and the daughters of sirens will reside in it;
it will no longer be resided in forever. 40 Just as God overturned Sodom and Gomorrah
and those bordering them," said the Lord, "no man will reside there and no son of man
will sojourn there.
