you scattered them in their faithlessness by which they broke faith with you. 8 O Lord,
with us is shamefacedness, with our kings, with our rulers, and with our fathers, who
sinned against you. 9 With the Lord our God are sympathies and sources of mercy, for
we departed 10 and did not listen to the voice of the Lord our God to walk in his laws,
which he gave in our presence by the hands of his slaves the prophets. 11 All Israel
transgressed your law and turned away so as not to listen to your voice. The curse
came upon us, as well as the oath which has been written in the law of Moses the slave
of God, because we sinned against him. 12 He confirmed his words which he spoke
against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us great acts of
wickedness, of the sort which did not happen under all the heaven, according to the
things which happened in Jerusalem. 13 As it has been written in the law of Moses, all
these acts of wickedness came upon us, yet we did not petition the face of the Lord our
God to turn away from our wrongdoings and to have understanding in all your truth.
14 The Lord watched A and brought them upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous over
all his work which he performed, yet we did not listen to his voice. 15 Now, O Lord our
God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made
for yourself a name as on this day: we sinned, we committed lawlessness. 16 O Lord, by
all your mercy, let your anger and your wrath then turn away from your city Jerusalem,
your holy mountain. For we sinned, and by the wrongdoings of us and of our fathers,
Jerusalem and your people became a reproach among all who surround us. 17 Now
listen, O Lord our God, to the prayer of your slave and to his petitions, and cause your
face to shine on your desolate sanctuary for your own sake, O Lord. 18 Incline your ear,
O my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see the obliteration of us and of your city,
over which your name has been invoked. For we do not cast forth our sympathy before
you on the basis of our acts of righteousness, but on the basis of your many
sympathies. 19 O Lord, listen; O Lord, be merciful; O Lord, pay attention and act; B for
your own sake, do not delay, O my God. For your name has been invoked over your
city and over your people."
20 While I was still speaking, praying, redeeming my sins and the sins of my people
Israel, and casting forth my mercy before the Lord my God concerning the holy
mountain of my God, C 21 while I was still speaking in the prayer, behold, the man
Gabriel, whom I saw in the vision in the beginning, was flying, and he touched me
about the hour of the evening sacrifice. 22 He made me understand, and he spoke with
me; he said, "Daniel, I have now come out to instruct you in understanding. 23 In the
beginning of your petition the word came out, and I came to tell you, for you are a man
of desires. Reflect on the matter and gain understanding by the sight. 24 Seventy weeks D
Outside of Daniel, ebdomas, "week" occurs only in names and definitions of holidays:
the sabbath (the end of a week, 2 Macc. 6:11), Pentecost (seven weeks after Passover,
Ex. 34:22), and Jubilees (the year after every seven "weeks of years," Lev. 25:8)
