Jeremiah 38 A
1 "In that time," said the Lord, "I will be God for the race of Israel, and they will be a
people for me." 2 The Lord said this: "I found him warm in the desert with those who
perished by the sword. Proceed, and do not destroy Israel." 3 The Lord appeared to him
from afar: "I loved you with an eternal love; because of this, I attracted you in
compassion. 4 Still I will build you, and you will be built, O virgin of Israel. Still you will
take your tambourine and come out with the congregation of those who are playing.
5 Still you planted vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; plant, and give praise. 6 For it
is a day of the calling of those who speak in defense on the mountains of Ephraim:
`Arise, and go up on Zion to the Lord our God.´"
7 For the Lord said this to Jacob, "Cheer and snicker over the head of the nations;
cause things to be heard and give praise; say, `The Lord saved his people, the remnant
of Israel.´ 8 Behold, I am bringing them from the north, and will gather them from the
end of the earth at the festival of the Passover. B He will procreate a great multitude,
and they will return here. 9 They came out with weeping, and I will bring them back with
comfort, causing them to lodge by the channels of waters in a straight way. They will
not wander in it, for I became a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn."
10 Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and announce it to the islands which are at
a distance: "Say, `The one who scattered Israel will gather him and preserve him as
one who feeds his flock.´ 11 For the Lord redeemed Jacob; he rescued him out of the
hand of those who were more solid than he. 12 They will come and be cheerful on the
mountain of Zion, and will come upon the good things of the Lord, upon a land of grain,
wine, fruits, livestock, and sheep. Their souls will be like fruitful trees; they will no
longer be hungry. 13 Then virgins will rejoice in the congregation of the young, and the
old will rejoice. I will turn their mourning into joy and will cause them to be cheerful. 14 I
will magnify and intoxicate the souls of the priests, the sons of Levi, and my people will
be filled with my good things."
15 The Lord said this: "A voice was heard in Ramah C of lamentation, weeping, and
wailing. Rachel was weeping for her sons and did not want to be comforted, D because
they are no more." 16 The Lord said this: "Let your voice cease from weeping and your
eyes from your tears, for there is a reward for your works. They will return from the
land of enemies; 17 there will be a permanent dwelling for your children. 18 I heard the
sound of Ephraim wailing: `You disciplined me, and I was disciplined; like a calf, I was
not taught. Return me, and I will return, for you are the Lord my God. 19 For after my
captivity I repented, and after I knew, I groaned on a day of shame; I showed you that
I received reproach from my youth.´ 20 Ephraim is a beloved son to me, a child I delight
in, for because my words are in him, I will remember him. Because of this, I hurried to
him; I will have mercy on him," says the Lord.
