the cup of failure, the goblet of anger; you will no longer continue to drink it. 23 I will
give it into the hands of those who wronged you and those who humiliated you, who
said to your soul, `Bow down so that we may pass by.´ You placed your backs level
with the earth for those who were going by outside."
Isaiah 52
1 Wake up, wake up, O Zion. Put on your strength, O Zion. Put on your glory, O
Jerusalem, the holy city. No longer will the uncircumcised and unclean man continue to
pass through you. 2 Shake off the dirt and arise; sit down, O Jerusalem. Take off the
chain on your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. 3 For thus says the Lord: "You were sold
for free, and you will be redeemed without silver." 4 The Lord says this: "Formerly, my
people went down to Egypt to sojourn there, and they were led to the Assyrians by
force. 5 Now why are you here?" Thus says the Lord: "Because my people were taken
for free, you are amazed and you howl." Thus says the Lord: "Because of you, my
name is constantly blasphemed among the nations. 6 Because of this, my people will
know my name on that day, for I myself am the one who is speaking.
7 I am present like springtime on the mountains, like the feet of one who preaches as
good news a report of peace, like one who preaches good things. For I will cause your
salvation to be heard; I will say, `O Zion, your God reigns.´ 8 For the voice of those who
guard you was lifted up, and they will be cheerful together with one voice. For they will
exchange glances when the Lord has mercy on Zion. 9 Let the deserted places of
Jerusalem break forth in cheerfulness together, for the Lord had mercy on it and
delivered Jerusalem. 10 The Lord will reveal his holy arm in the sight of all the nations,
and all the heights of the earth will see the salvation which is from our God.
11 Depart, depart; come out of there, and do not touch what is unclean. Come out of
its midst; be separate, you who carry the vessels of the Lord. 12 For you will not come
out in confusion, nor will you go in flight. For the Lord will go ahead of you, and the
one who gathers you will be the Lord God of Israel.
13 Behold, my servant will understand; he will be exalted and glorified exceedingly.
14 Just as there are many who will be astonished at you, so will your appearance be held
in contempt by men, and your glory will be held in contempt by men. 15 So, many
nations will be amazed at him, and kings will shut their mouths, for those who were not
told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand."
Isaiah 53
1 O Lord, who believed our report? To whom was the arm of the Lord revealed? 2 In
his presence we described him as a child, as a root in a thirsty land. There is no
attractiveness or glory in him; we saw him, and he had no attractiveness or beauty.
3 Instead, his appearance is without honor, a failure beyond all the sons of men. He is a
man in calamity, acquainted with the bearing of sickness. For he has turned his face
away; he was dishonored and not reckoned.
4 He carries our sins and suffers pain regarding us, and we reckoned him to be in
trouble, in calamity, and in distress. 5 He was wounded because of our lawless acts and
