easts due to the coveted field and the product of the vine. 13 As for the land of my
people, thorn and grass will come up, and cheerfulness will be taken away from every
house. 14 As for the rich city, the houses are abandoned. They will let go of the wealth
of the city and the coveted houses. The villages will be caves forever, the cheerfulness
of wild donkeys, the pastures of shepherds, 15 until the Spirit comes upon you from the
highest place. Carmel will be a desert, and Carmel will be reckoned as a forest.
16 Judgment will rest in the desert, and righteousness will reside in Carmel. 17 The works
of righteousness will be peace; righteousness will gain possession of rest, and they will
be confident forever. 18 His people will reside in a city of peace, and will reside in it
confidently; they will rest with wealth. 19 If the hail descends, it will not come upon you;
those who reside in the forests will be confident like those in the plain. 20 Blessed are
those who sow by every water, where the ox and donkey are treading.
Isaiah 33
1 Woe to those who distress you. But no one makes you distressed, and the one who
rejects does not reject you. Those who reject will be captured and delivered up; like a
moth on a garment, so they will be defeated. 2 O Lord, have mercy on us, for we have
trusted in you. The seed of those who distrusted resulted in destruction; our salvation
was in a season of oppression. 3 Because of the sound of your fear, peoples were
astonished due to your fear, and the nations scattered. 4 Now the spoils of a small and a
great person from you will be gathered; in the manner that someone might gather
locusts, so they will mock you. 5 The God who resides in high places is holy; Zion was
filled with justice and righteousness. 6 They will be delivered up by the law; our salvation
is in treasures. Wisdom, knowledge, and piety toward the Lord are there; these are
treasures of righteousness. 7 Now behold, these will be afraid in fear of you; those
whom you feared will be afraid A due to you. For messengers will be sent forth
requesting peace, B bitterly weeping, encouraging peace. 8 For the ways of these will
become desolate; the fear of the nations has ceased, and the testament with these is
being taken away, and you will not reckon them as men. 9 The land mourned; Lebanon
was ashamed. Sharon became marshes; Galilee and Carmel will be visible. 10 "Now I will
arise," says the Lord. "Now I will be glorified; now I will be exalted. 11 Now you will see;
now you will perceive. The strength of your breath will be vain; fire will devour you.
12 The nations will be burned up, as a thorn in a field is cast out and burned up.
13 Those from afar will hear what I did; those who come near will know my
strength." 14 The lawless in Zion stood apart; trembling will seize the ungodly. Who will
report to you that a fire is being kindled? Who will report the eternal place to you?
15 One who walks in righteousness, who declares the straight way, who hates
lawlessness and wrongdoing, who rids his hands of gifts, who stops his ears so that he
may not hear a judgment of blood, who shuts his eyes so that he may not see
wrongdoing. 16 He will reside in a high cave of a strong cliff; bread will be given to him,
and his water will be faithful. 17 You will see a king with glory, and your eyes will see a
