up over the head of Jonah to be a shade above his head, to shade him from his
troubles. Jonah was filled with great joy over the gourd plant. 7 God ordered a worm on
the morning of the next day; it attacked the gourd plant, and it withered away. 8 When
the sun rose, God ordered a wind burning with the heat of summer, and the sun beat
down on the head of Jonah. He grew faint, denounced his soul, and said, "It is better
for me to die than to live." 9 God said to Jonah, "Have you been saddened exceedingly
over the gourd plant?" He said, "I have been saddened exceedingly, to the point of
death." 10 The Lord said, "You were concerned for the gourd plant, over which you did
not labor and which you did not nourish, which came into being overnight and perished
overnight. 11 Should I not be concerned for the great city of Nineveh, in which reside
more than one hundred twenty thousand men who do not recognize their right hand or
their left, as well as much livestock?"
