MICAH 1
1 The word of the Lord was directed at Micah the son of Moresheth in the days of
Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, regarding the things which he saw
concerning Samaria and concerning Jerusalem.
2 Hear the words, O peoples, and let the earth and all who are on it pay attention.
The Lord will be among you for testimony, the Lord from his holy house. 3 For behold,
the Lord is going out of his place; he will descend on and mount the heights of the
earth. 4 The mountains will be shaken underneath him, and the valleys will melt like wax
due to the presence of fire and like water being brought down on a slope. 5 All these
things are because of the ungodliness of Jacob and because of the sin of the house of
Israel. What is the ungodliness of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? What is the sin of the house
of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem? 6 I will place Samaria as a gardener's hut in a field and as
a planting in a vineyard. I will pull her stones down into chaos, and I will reveal her
foundations. 7 They will cut down all her carvings, they will burn with fire all her fees,
and I will set up all her idols for obliteration. For she gathered together as a result of
the fees of prostitution, and she assembled together as a result of the fees of
prostitution.
8 Because of this, she will mourn and lament; she will go barefoot and naked; she
will engage in mourning like that of dragons, and in grief like that of the daughters of
sirens. 9 For her plague was prevalent, since it came as far as Judah and reached as far
as the gate of my people, as far as Jerusalem. 10 You who are in Gath, do not be
magnified. You Anakim, A do not rebuild anything from the house upon laughter; scatter
dirt upon your laughter. 11 She who resides well, she who resides in Seneh, B did not
come out of her cities in order to mourn for the house neighboring her. She will receive
from you a plague of pain. 12 Who started out for the good things of her who resides in
pain? For wicked things descended from the Lord on the gates of Jerusalem, 13 the noise
of chariots and horsemen. She who resides in Lachish is the originator of sin for the
daughter of Zion, for in you were found the ungodly acts of Israel. 14 Because of this,
she will issue exiles, worthless houses, as far as the inheritance of Gath; they have
become empty C for the kings of Israel. 15 Until they bring back the heirs, D she who
resides in Lachish is the inheritance; the glory of the daughter of Israel will reach as far
as Adullam. E 16 Shave and cut off your hair over your tender children. Extend your
A The Anakim were Canaanites in Gath and other Philistine communities (Josh. 11:22)
B Seneh was the south cliff of a deep ravine north of Jerusalem, just east of Ramah
(1 Kgdms. 14:4); the Gk sennaar also transliterates "Shinar," an ancient name for
Babylon (Gen. 10:10)
C she will issue exiles ... they (that is, worthless houses) have become empty V ¦ you
will issue exiles ... it (that is, the inheritance of Gath) has become empty A
D they bring back the heirs VA ¦ I bring the heirs back to you
E Adullam was 18 miles southwest of Jerusalem, and Lachish was 11 miles further
southwest, thus Israel's "inheritance" and "glory" is limited to the territory of Judah
