house, and behold, he was making a work over the stones. 4 The implement which he
was making with his hands fell, and he made it again, another implement, just as it was
pleasing in his sight to make it.
5 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 6 "Will I not be able to make you,
O house of Israel, just as this potter? Behold, you are in my hands like the clay of the
potter. 7 If I at last speak over a nation or over a kingdom to remove and to destroy
them, 8 and that nation turns away from all their wicked things, I will repent concerning
the wicked things which I planned to do to them, 9 and if I at last speak over a nation
and over a kingdom to rebuild and to plant it, 10 and they do evil things before me so as
not to hear my voice, I will repent concerning the good things which I spoke to do for
them. 11 Now say to the men of Judah and to those who reside in Jerusalem, `Behold, I
am forming wicked things against you, and I am performing a reckoning against you.
Let each one now turn away from his evil way; make your habits better.´ 12 They said,
`We will be brave, for we will go after our perversions, and each of us will do the things
which are pleasing to his evil heart.´ 13 Because of this, thus says the Lord: `Inquire
now among the nations; who heard such awful things which the virgin of Israel did
exceedingly? 14 Will knolls fail from a cliff, or snow from Lebanon? Will water violently
carried by the wind turn aside? 15 For my people forgot me; they burned incense in vain.
They will become weak in their ways, treading paths for eternal miles A since they do
not have a road for travel, 16 arranging their land for obliteration and an eternal hissing.
Everyone who goes through it will be astounded and will shake their head. 17 I will
scatter them before the face of their enemies like a burning wind; I will show them the
day of their destruction.´"
18 They said, "Come, let us devise a plan against Jeremiah, for the law will not perish
from the priest, nor will counsel from the one who understands, nor will the word from
the prophet. Come, let us attack him with the tongue, and we will hear all his words."
19 Listen to me, O Lord, and listen to the sound of my righteous decree. 20 Surely
wicked things are not repayed in return for good! For they joined in speaking words
against my soul and hid their punishment for me. Remember me standing before your
face in order to speak good things on their behalf, in order to turn your fury away from
them. 21 Because of this, give their sons to famine and collect them for the hand of the
sword. Let their women be childless and widows; let their men be taken away by death,
and their young men fall by the sword in battle. 22 Let there be a cry in their houses.
You will bring robbers against them suddenly, for they carried out a word for seizing
me, and they hid snares against me. 23 O Lord, you knew all their counsel for death
against me. Do not let their unjust acts go unpunished, and do not blot out their sins
from before your face. Let their weakness come before you; deal with them in the
season of your fury.
