exposing the shame of Egypt. 5 After the Egyptians are defeated, they will be ashamed
on account of the Ethiopians, on whom the Egyptians had trusted, for they were their
glory. 6 Those who reside in this island will say, `Behold, we who could not be saved
from the king of the Assyrians had trusted to flee to them for help. How will we be
saved?´"
Isaiah 21
1 The vision of the desert.
As a hurricane might pass through a desert, coming from a desert, from land, 2 so a
fearful and harsh vision was declared to me. The one who is treacherous acts
treacherously; the one who is lawless acts lawlessly. The Elamites are upon me, and
the ambassadors of the Persians are coming against me. Now I will groan and comfort
myself. 3 Because of this, my loins were filled with feebleness, and labor pains took me
like a woman giving birth. I acted unjustly so as not to hear; I hurried so as not to see.
4 My heart is wandering, and lawlessness immerses A me; my soul stood still in fear.
5 Prepare the table; eat, drink. Arise, you rulers; prepare shields. 6 For the Lord said this
to me: "Proceed; station a watchman for yourself and declare whatever you see." 7 I
saw riders, two horsemen, a rider of a donkey and a rider of a camel. Hear with much
hearing, 8 and call Uriah to the watchtower of the Lord. He said, "I stood through all the
day, and I stood over the camp the entire night." 9 Behold, he himself is coming, a rider
of a pair of horses. He answered and said, "Babylon has fallen; all her statues and her
manufactured things were crushed to the ground." 10 Hear, you who have been
abandoned and you who are in pain; hear the things I heard from the Lord of sabaóth.
The God of Israel made a declaration to us.
11 The vision of Idumea.
He calls to me from Seir, "Guard the battlements!" 12 I am guarding in the morning
and the night; if you are seeking, seek and reside beside me.
13 You will lie down in the grove at evening, in the way of Dedan. 14 You who reside in
the country of Teman, bring water to meet one who is thirsty. Meet with bread those
who are fleeing 15 because of the multitude of those who are fleeing, B because of the
multitude of those who are wandering, because of the multitude of the sword, because
of the multitude of stretched arrows, and because of the multitude of those who have
fallen in war. 16 For the Lord said this to me: "In one more year, like the year of an
employee, the glory of the sons of Kedar will fail, 17 and the remnant of the strong
arrows of the sons of Kedar will be few, for the Lord God of Israel spoke."
Isaiah 22
1 The word of the valley of Zion.
What happened to you now that you all ascended to worthless housetops? 2 The city
was filled with people shouting. Your wounded are not wounded from the sword, and
