41 Behold, a people and a great nation is coming from the north, and many kings will
be awoken from the end of the earth. 42 They have a bow and a dagger. It is bold, and
will not show mercy. Their voices will resound like the sea; they will ride on horses,
equipped for battle against you like fire, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon
heard their sound, and his hands were disabled; oppression prevailed over them, pains
as of a woman giving birth. 44 Behold, he will go up like a lion from the Jordan to the
place of Ethan, for I will quickly chase them away from her, and I will stand every
young man against her. For who is like me? Who will resist me? Who is this shepherd
who will stand in front of my face?" 45 Because of this, listen to the counsel of the Lord
which he has offered against Babylon and his plans which he devised against the
Chaldeans who are residing it: `Surely the lambs of their flocks will be ruined; surely
pasture will disappear from them.´ 46 For due to the sound of the capture of Babylon,
the earth will shake and a cry will be heard among the nations.
Jeremiah 28 A
1 Thus says the Lord: "Behold, I am arousing against Babylon and against the
resident Chaldeans a ruinous burning wind. 2 I will send forth insolent men to Babylon,
and they will be insolent with her and damage her land. Woe against everything around
Babylon on the day of her mistreatment. 3 Let the one who bends his bow bend it, and
let the one who has his weapons put them on. Do not spare her young men; obliterate
all her force." 4 The wounded will fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and those who have
been pierced will fall outside her. 5 For Israel and Judah were not bereaved of their God,
of the almighty Lord, because their land was filled with wrongdoing, away from the holy
things of Israel. 6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and let each of you cause his soul to
escape. Do not be overthrown by her wrongdoing, for it is the season of her vengeance
from the Lord; he is rendering a repayment to her. 7 Babylon was a gold cup in the hand
of the Lord, causing all the earth to be drunk. The nations drank some of her wine;
because of this, they were shaken. 8 Babylon suddenly fell and broke. Lament her; take
rosin for her ruin, if somehow she may be healed. 9 We treated Babylon, yet she was
not healed. Let us abandon her, and let each one depart to his own land. For her
judgment drew near to heaven; it rose up as far as the stars. 10 The Lord brought out
his judgment; come, let us report to Zion the works of the Lord our God.
11 Prepare the arrows; fill the quivers. The Lord woke up the spirit of the king of the
Medes, for his wrath is for Babylon in order to eliminate it. For it is the vengeance of
the Lord; it is the vengeance of his people. 12 Lift up a sign over the walls of Babylon;
set up the quivers; wake up the guards; prepare the weapons. For the Lord initiated
and will perform the things which he spoke against those who reside in Babylon, 13 who
pitched their tents by many waters and by the abundance of her treasures; your end
will truly arrive inside your bowels. 14 For the Lord swore by his arm: "For I will fill you
with men as with locusts, and those who descend will make utterance against you."
15 He made the earth by his strength; he prepared the inhabited world by his
wisdom; by his understanding he extended heaven. 16 He set up the sound of water as a
