Isaiah 8
1 The Lord said to me, "Take for yourself a sheet from a large new roll, and write on
it with a man's pen, `Of making a plunder of spoils quickly,´ for it is at hand. 2 Make
faithful men as witnesses for me: Uriah, and Zechariah son of Berakiah." 3 I
approached A the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The Lord said
to me, "Call his name, `Take spoils speedily, plunder quickly.´ 4 For before the child
knows how to summon father or mother, he will receive the power of Damascus and
the spoils of Samaria before the king of the Assyrians."
5 The Lord spoke to me yet again: 6 "Because this people does not want the water of
Siloam which goes quietly, but wants to have Rezin and the son of Remaliah as king
over you, 7 because of this, behold, the Lord is bringing up against you the strong and
abundant water of the river, the king of the Assyrians and his glory. He will come up
over every valley of yours and will walk over every wall of yours. 8 He will take away
from Judea a man who can lift his head or is able to accomplish anything. His camp will
exist to fill the breadth of your land." God is with us; 9 know this, O nations, and be
overcome. Listen to the end of the earth; be overcome after you become strong. For if
you again become strong, you will again be overcome. 10 Whatever counsel you offer,
the Lord will disperse it, and whatever word you speak, it will not remain among you,
for the Lord God is with us.
11 Thus says the Lord: "With a strong hand they are distrustful on the journey of the
way of this people, saying, 12 `Perhaps they may say, "It is hard!" For everything that
this people says is hard.´ Do not be afraid of their fear, and do not be disturbed.
13 Sanctify the Lord himself, and he will be your fear. 14 If you are trusting in him, he will
be a sacred place for you, and you will not meet him like stumbling against a stone or
like falling on a rock. The house of Jacob is in a snare, and those who dwell in
Jerusalem are in a chasm. 15 Because of this, many among them will be powerless. They
will fall and be crushed; they will come near, and men who are in security will be
seized."
16 Then those who are sealed so as not to learn the law will be evident. 17 He will say,
"I will wait for God, who turned his face away from the house of Jacob, and I will be
trusting in him. 18 Behold, I and the children which God gave to me. They will exist as
signs and wonders in the house of Israel from the Lord of sabaóth, who resides in
Mount Zion." 19 If they say to you, "Seek those who sound forth from the earth and the
ventriloquists, those who speak vanities, who sound forth out of the belly," does a
nation not go toward its God? Why do they examine the dead concerning the living?
20 For he gave the law for help, so that they might not talk like this word, concerning
which there are no gifts to give concerning it. 21 Famine will come upon you harshly, and
it will be that, whenever you are hungry, you will grieve, and you will speak ill of the
ruler and the fathers' heritage. They will look up to heaven above, 22 and they will look
at the earth below. Behold: oppression and anguish and darkness, severe distress and
