Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his force arrived at Jerusalem and laid siege to
it. 2 In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth of the month,
the city was broken into. 3 All the governors of the king of Babylon entered and sat in
the middle gate: Nergal-sar-ezer, Samgar, Nebu-sekim, Nebu-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the
Rabmag, and the rest of the governors of the king of Babylon. 14 They sent forth and
took Jeremiah out of the courtyard of the prison, and gave him to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, son of Shaphan. They brought him out, and he sat in the midst of the people.
15 The word of the Lord was directed at Jeremiah in the courtyard of the prison,
saying, 16 "Go and say to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, `So said the Lord God of Israel:
"Behold, I am bringing my words over this city for wicked things and not for good. 17 I
will save you on that day, and I will not give you into the hands of the men due to
whose presence you are afraid. 18 For I will save you, and you will not fall by the sword;
your soul will be for finding, because you trusted in me," says the Lord.´"
Jeremiah 47 A
1 The word which was directed at Jeremiah from the Lord later on, after
Nebuzaradan the chief butcher who was from Ramah sent him forth, when he took him
in handcuffs in the midst of the exile of Judah, of those who were led to Babylon. 2 The
chief butcher took him and said to him, "The Lord your God spoke these wicked things
over this place, 3 and the Lord did them, because you sinned against him and did not
listen to his voice. 4 Behold, I released you from the handcuffs which were on your
hands. If it is fine before you to come with me to Babylon, proceed, and I will place my
eyes over you, 5 but if not, run away and return to Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of
Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon installed in the land of Judah, and reside with him
in the midst of the people in the land of Judah. Go to all the places which are good in
your eyes to go." The chief butcher gave him gifts and sent him forth. 6 He came to
Gedaliah at Mizpah and settled in the midst of the people who were left in the land.
7 All the governors of the force which was in the field, they and their men, heard that
the king of Babylon installed Gedaliah in the land, and they entrusted to him the men
and their wives whom he did not deport to Babylon. 8 Ishmael son of Nethaniah,
Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite,
and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite, they and their men, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.
9 Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, saying, "Do not be afraid due to the
presence of the children of the Chaldeans. Reside in the land and work for the king of
Babylon, and it will be better for you. 10 Behold, I am sitting before you at Mizpah, to
stand in front of the Chaldeans who may come against you. Collect wine and summer
fruits and collect oil, and put them into your vessels; reside in the cities over which you
have prevailed." 11 All the Judeans who were in the land of Moab and among the sons of
Ammon, who were in Idumea, and who were in all the land heard that the king of
Babylon granted a remnant to Judah, and that he installed over them Gedaliah son of
Ahikam. 12 They came to Gedaliah in the land of Judah at Mizpah and collected wine, an
exceedingly large amount of summer fruit, and oil.
