to him, "The Lord did not call your name Pashhur, but Deportation. 4 For thus says the
Lord: `Behold, I am giving you into a deportation with all your friends; they will fall by
the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give you and all Judah into
the hands of the king of Babylon, and they will deport them and cut them down with
swords. 5 I will give all the strength of this city, all its labors, and all the treasures of the
king of Judah into the hands of his enemies, and they will bring them to Babylon. 6 You
and all those who reside in your house will go in captivity; you will die in Babylon, and
there you and all your friends, to whom you prophesied lies, will be buried.´
7
You deceived me, O Lord, and I was deceived; you were mighty, and you were
powerful. I existed for laughter; I continued being mocked every day. 8 For I will laugh
with my bitter speech; I will invoke faithlessness and distress, for the word of the Lord
existed for a reproach to me and for scoffing at all my day. 9 I said, `I will not name the
name of the Lord, and I will no longer speak in his name.´ It became like a burning fire
flaming in my bones; I was weakened everywhere, and cannot endure. 10 For I heard
the censure of many who were gathering around: `Conspire; let all of us men who are
his friends conspire against him! Watch his intention, whether he will be deceived, and
we will be powerful against him and take our vengeance from him.´ 11 The Lord was
with me as a strong warrior; because of this, they persecuted me, yet could not
perceive; they were exceedingly ashamed, for they did not perceive their dishonors,
which will never be forgotten. 12 O Lord, who attests righteous acts, who understands
minds and hearts, may I see vengeance from you among them, for to you I revealed
my pleas.
13
Sing to the Lord; sing praise to him, for he rescued the soul of a poor person from
the hand of evildoers.
14
Cursed is the day on which I was born; let the day on which my mother gave birth
to me not be desired. 15 Cursed is the man who preached good news to my father,
saying, `A male was born to you; be cheerful!´ 16 Let that man be like the cities which
the Lord overthrew in fury and did not regret it. Let him hear an outcry in the morning
and shouting at noon, 17 because he did not kill me in the womb, and my mother did not
become my tomb for me and her womb one of eternal conception. 18 Why is this, that I
came out of the womb to see troubles and labors, and my days continue in shame?"
Jeremiah 21
1 The word which was directed at Jeremiah from the Lord, when King Zedekiah sent
forth to him Pashhur son of Malchijah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest,
saying, 2 "Inquire of the Lord concerning us, for the king of Babylon is standing against
us. He will go away from us, if the Lord will act according to all his marvels."
3 Jeremiah said to them, "So you will say to Zedekiah king of Judah, 4 `Thus says the
Lord: "Behold, I will turn back into the midst of this city the military weapons with
which you battle against the Chaldeans who have enclosed you from outside the wall. 5 I
will battle you with an outstretched hand and with a mighty arm, in anger and great
wrath. 6 I will attack all those who reside in this city, the men and the livestock, with a
great death, and they will die. 7 After this," so says the Lord, "I will give Zedekiah king
of Judah, his servants, and the people who are left in this city from the death, from the
