Jeremiah 42 A
1 The word which was directed at Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim
king of Judah; he said, 2 "Proceed to the house of the Rechabites. You will bring them
into the house of the Lord, into one of the courtyards, and give them wine to drink." 3 I
brought forth Jeconiah, B the son of Jeremiah son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, his
sons, and all the house of the Rechabites. 4 I brought them into the house of the Lord,
into the priestly chamber of the sons of Hananiah son of Gedaliah, C a man of God who
was near the house of the rulers who are over the house of Mahseiah son of Shallum,
who guarded the courtyard. 5 I gave in front of them a jar of wine and cups, and I said,
"Drink wine." 6 They said, "We will not drink wine, for Jonadab son of Rechab, our
father, commanded us, saying, `You and your sons will not drink wine forever. 7 You will
not build a house, you will not sow seed, and you will not have a vineyard, for you will
reside in tents all your days, so that you may live for many days on the land on which
you are spending time.´ 8 We heard the voice of Jonadab our father for us, our wives,
our sons, and our daughters not to drink wine all our days, 9 and not to build houses to
reside there; we did not have a vineyard, field, and seed. 10 We resided in tents, and we
heard and acted according to everything which Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 It
happened that, when Nebuchadnezzar went up against the land, we said, `After we go
up, we will come D into Jerusalem due to the presence of the force of the Chaldeans and
due to the presence of the force of the Assyrians,´ and we resided there."
12 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 13 "The Lord says this: `Go and
say to the man of Judah and to those who reside in Jerusalem, "Won't you accept
discipline in order to hear my words? 14 The sons of Jonadab son of Rechab established
the word by which he commanded his children not to drink wine, and they did not
drink. I spoke to you early; I spoke, yet you did not hear. 15 I sent forth to you my
servants the prophets, saying, `Each of you turn away from his evil way and improve
your habits. You will not go after other gods to serve them, and you will reside on the
land which I gave to you and your fathers,´ yet you did not incline your ears, and you
did not hear. 16 The sons of Jonadab son of Rechab established the command of their
father, but this people did not hear me."´ 17 Because of this, the Lord said this: `Behold,
I am bringing over Judah and over those who reside in Jerusalem all the wicked things
which I spoke against them.´
18 Because of this, the Lord said this: `Since the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab
heard the command of their father so as to do just as their father commanded them,
19 a man of the sons of Jonadab son of Rechab will not fail to stand in front of me for all
