AMOS 1
1 The words of Amos which occurred in Hakkerem A of Tekoa, which he saw
concerning Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam
son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
2 He said, "The Lord made an utterance from Zion and issued his voice from
Jerusalem. The pastures of the shepherds mourned, and the summit of Carmel dried
up."
3The Lord said, "For three ungodly acts of Damascus and for four, I will not turn
away from him, since they sawed with iron saws those in Gilead who were pregnant. 4 I
will send out fire into the house of Hazael, and it will devour the foundations of the son
of Hadad. 5 I will break the bars of Damascus, I will destroy the residents from the plain
of On, and I will cut down the tribe of the men of Charan. The distinguished people of
Syria will be taken captive," says the Lord.
6 Thus says the Lord: "For three ungodly acts of Gaza and for four, I will not turn
away from them, because they took captive the captivity of Solomon, to shut them up
in Idumea. 7 I will send out fire over the walls of Gaza, and it will devour her
foundations. 8 I will destroy the residents from Ashdod, and the tribe will be removed
from Ashkelon; I will bring forth my hand against Ekron, and the remnants of the
Philistines will perish," says the Lord.
9 Thus says the Lord: "For three ungodly acts of Tyre and for four, I will not turn
away from her, since they shut up the captivity of Solomon in Idumea B and did not
remember the testament of brothers. 10 I will send out fire over the walls of Tyre, and it
will devour her foundations."
11 Thus says the Lord: "For three ungodly acts of Idumea and for four, I will not turn
away from them, because they pursued his brother with the sword. He corrupted a
womb C on the ground, seized upon his horror during a testimony, and preserved his
being startled during a quarrel. 12 I will send out fire into Teman, and it will devour the
foundations of her walls."
13 Thus says the Lord: "For three ungodly acts of the sons of Ammon and for four, I
will not turn away from him, since they ripped up those of the Gileadites who were
pregnant, so that they might widen their borders. 14 I will kindle fire on the walls of
Rabbah, and it will devour her foundations with shouting on the day of battle. She will
be shaken on the day of her termination. 15 Her kings will go into captivity, their priests
and their rulers together," says the Lord.
