For they are like crows, between heaven and earth. 54 For whenever fire falls upon a
house of wooden gods or those overlaid with gold or silver, their priests will flee and
seek safety, but they themselves will be burned like central beams. 55 They will not resist
a king or armies, 56 so how can anyone accept or think that they are gods?
57 Wooden gods and those overlaid with silver and gold will not find safety either
from thieves or from robbers. The strong of them will remove the gold, the silver, and
the clothing which they are wearing, and get away with it; they will not help
themselves. 58 As a result, it is better to be a king who displays his own bravery, or a
useful vessel in a house which the owner will use, than the false gods, or even a door in
an house which keeps safe the things which are in it than the false gods, or a wooden
pillar in a palace than the false gods.
59 For the sun, moon, and stars are compliant, since they are bright and are sent
forth for duty. 60 Similarly, lightning is easily seen whenever it flashes; in the same way,
a breeze blows in every country. 61 As for clouds, whenever they are arranged by God to
go over the entire inhabited world, they accomplish what was ordained, and fire sent
forth from above to consume hills and forests performs what was directed. 62 These are
comparable in neither their appearances nor their powers. 63 Therefore one can neither
think them to be nor call them gods, since they are able neither to judge a case nor to
do good to men. 64 So know that they are not gods; do not fear them.
65 For they will neither curse nor bless kings, 66 neither can they show signs in heaven
among the nations, nor shine like the sun, nor illuminate like the moon. 67 The beasts,
which can flee for shelter to benefit themselves, are better than they are. 68 So it is by
no means apparent to us that they are gods; accordingly, do not fear them.
69 For just as an amulet A guards nothing in a cucumber field, so are their wooden
gods and those overlaid with gold and silver. 70 In the same manner, their wooden gods
and those overlaid with gold and silver are comparable to a thorny shrub in an orchard
on which every bird sits, and similarly to a dead body which is throw out in the dark.
71 Due to the purple and the glitter which is rotting upon them, you will know that they
are not gods. They will be consumed at last and will be a reproach in the country. 72 So,
a righteous man who does not have idols is better, for he will be far away from
reproach.
