Jeremiah 49 A
1 All the governors of the force, Johanan, Azariah son of Mahseiah, and all the people
from the small to the great, 2 approached Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, "Now
let our mercy fall before your face; pray to the Lord your God concerning these who are
left. For we few were left from many, just as your eyes see. 3 Let the Lord your God tell
us the way by which we will go and the word which we will perform." 4 Jeremiah said to
them, "I heard you; behold, I will pray to the Lord our God according to your words. It
will be that, whatever the Lord God will answer, I will tell you the word; I will not hide a
saying from you." 5 They said to Jeremiah, "Let the Lord be among us as a righteous
and faithful witness, if we do not do according to every word which the Lord sends
forth to us. 6 If it is good, and even if it is wicked, we will listen to the voice of the Lord
our God, to whom we are sending you forth, so that it may be better for us, because
we will listen to the voice of the Lord our God."
7 It happened that, after ten days, the word of the Lord was directed at Jeremiah.
8 He called Johanan, the governors of the force, and all the people from the small to the
great, 9 and said to them, "So said the Lord: 10 `If you sit in this land, I will build you and
not pull down; I will plant you and not pluck out. For I came to a halt regarding the
wicked things which I did to you. 11 Do not be afraid due to the presence of the king of
Babylon, of whom you are afraid due to his presence. Do not be afraid,´ says the Lord,
`for I am with you to rescue you and save you out of his hand. 12 I will give you mercy,
I will show mercy to you, and I will return you to your land.´ 13 If you say, `We will not
sit in this land, in order not to listen to the voice of the Lord, 14 for we will enter the land
of Egypt; we will not see a battle, we will not hear the sound of a trumpet, we will not
be hungry for bread, and we will reside there,´ 15 because of this, hear the word of the
Lord. So said the Lord: `If you give your face to Egypt and enter to reside there, 16 it
will be that the sword of which you are afraid due to its presence will find you in the
land of Egypt, and the famine for which you have concern due to its presence will
overtake you in Egypt, you will die there. 17 They will be all the men and all the
strangers who set their face toward the land of Egypt to reside there. They will fail by
the sword and by famine, and none of them will be saved from the wicked things which
I am bringing over them.´ 18 For so said the Lord: `Just as my fury dropped on those
who reside in Jerusalem, so will my fury drop on you when you enter Egypt. You will
become a desolation, under the hand of others, a curse, and a reproach, and you will
no longer see this place.´ 19 These are the things which the Lord spoke regarding you,
those who are left of Judah. Do not enter Egypt. 20 Know now that you did evil in your
souls when you sent me forth, saying, `Pray to the Lord concerning us; we will do
according to everything which the Lord speaks to you,´ 21 yet you did not listen to the
voice of the Lord, by which he sent me forth to you. 22 Now, by sword and by famine,
you will fail in the place which you wish to enter in order to reside there."
