of them ran and opened the gates of the park. 26 When the servants of the house heard
the shouting in the park, they rushed in through the side gate to see what had
happened to her. 27 After the elders gave their reports, the slaves were exceedingly
ashamed, for such a report had never been given concerning Susannah.
28 It happened that, on the next day when the people came together with her
husband Jehoiakim, the two elders came; they were full of a lawless intention against
Susannah, to put her to death. 29 They said before the people, "Send for Susannah, the
daughter of Hilkiah, who is the wife of Jehoiakim." They sent for her. 30 She came, as
well as her parents, her children, and all her relatives.
31 Susannah was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance. 32 The lawbreakers
ordered her to be uncovered (for she had been covered), so that they might be filled
with her beauty. 33 Her companions and all who saw her began to weep.
34 The two elders stood up in the midst of the people and placed their hands on her
head. 35 She wept and looked up to heaven, for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 The
elders said, "While we were walking in the park alone, this woman entered with two
maids, shut the gates of the park, and dismissed the maids. 37 A young man who had
been hidden came to her and lay with her. 38 We were in the corner of the park; when
we saw the lawlessness, we ran toward them. 39 When we saw them having intercourse,
we could not get a hold of that man because he was stronger than we were; he opened
the gates and bounded out. 40 We detained this woman and asked who the young man
was, 41 yet she did not want to tell us. We testify to these things."
The congregation believed them as the elders and judges of the people, and they
condemned her to die.
42 Susannah cried out in a loud voice, "O eternal God, the one who is the knower of
hidden things, who is aware of all things before their origin, 43 you realize that they have
given false testimony against me. Behold, I am to die even though I did nothing which
these men wickedly invented against me."
44 The Lord heard her voice. 45 As she was being led away to be executed, God raised
up the holy spirit of a young boy by the name of Daniel. 46 He shouted in a loud voice, "I
am innocent of the blood of this woman!"
47 All the people turned to him and said, "What is this word which you have spoken?"
48 He stood in their midst and said, "Are you so foolish, O sons of Israel, that without
identifying or ascertaining the facts you have condemned a daughter of Israel? 49 Return
to the place of judgment, for they have given false testimony against her."
50 All the people returned with haste. The elders said to him, "Come sit in our midst,
and explain to us how God has given you the office of elder." 51 Daniel said to them,
"Separate them at a distance from each other, and I will examine them."
52 When they were separated one from the other, he summoned one of them and
said to him, "You who have grown old during wicked days, your sins which you
previously committed have now come to light. 53 You render unjust judgments, condemn
the innocent, and set the guilty free, while the Lord says, `You will not kill the innocent
and the righteous.´ 54 Now then, if in fact you saw this woman, say under which tree
you saw them having intercourse with each other." He said, "Under the mastic tree."
55 Daniel said, "Indeed you have lied against your own head, for a messenger of God
