Hosea 13
1 According to the word of Ephraim, he received righteous decrees in Israel; he set
them up for Baal, and he died. 2 They still proceeded to sin; they made for themselves a
molten object from their silver according to the image of idols, works accomplished for
them by craftsmen. They say, "Sacrifice men, for calves have failed." 3 Because of this,
they will be like a morning cloud and like early dew which passes away, just like dust
blown away from the threshing floor and like a vapor due to tears. A
4 I am the Lord your God, who solidifies heaven and creates earth, whose hands
created all the host of heaven. I did not show them to you so that you might go after
them. I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and you will not know any God except
me; there is no one who saves besides me. 5 I shepherded you in the desert, in an
uninhabited land. 6 According to their pastures, they were filled in abundance and their
hearts were exalted; on account of this, they forgot me. 7 I will be for them like a
panther and like a leopard, according to the way of the Assyrians. 8 I will meet them like
a needy bear. I will tear the pericardium of their hearts, and the cubs of the thicket will
devour them there; the wild animals of the field will rip them up.
9 O Israel, who will help you in your ruin? 10 Where is this king of yours? Let him save
you in all your cities; let him judge you, of whom you said, "Give me a king and a
ruler." 11 I gave you a king in my wrath and held a collection of wrongdoing in my fury.
12 As for Ephraim, his sin has been hidden. 13 Pains like those of a woman in labor will
come to him. This son of yours is prudent, B because he will not lend support in the
crushing of children. 14 I will deliver them from the hand of Hades and redeem them
from death. Where is your penalty, O death? Where is your sting, O Hades? Comfort
has been hidden from my eyes.
15 For this will cause a division between brothers. The Lord will bring a burning wind
from the desert over him, dry up his rivulets, and cause his springs to be deserted. He
himself will dry up his land and all his desirable vessels.
Hosea 14 C
1 Samaria will be obliterated, for she resisted her God. They will fall by the sword;
their nursing infants will be dashed to the ground, and their pregnant women will be
ripped open.
2 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you became weak in your wrongdoings.
3 Take words with you and return to the Lord your God; say to him, so that you may not
receive wrongdoing and so that you may receive good things, "We will render the fruit
of our lips. 4 Assyria will not save us; we will not mount on a horse. We will no longer
say `Our gods´ to the works of our hands." The one who is in you will show mercy to
an orphan.
