hearts. 19 Behold, there is the sound of the outcry of the daughter of my people from a
land far away: `The Lord is not in Zion, is he? The king is not there, is he?´ Why did
they provoke my wrath with their carvings and with strange vanities: 20 `The summer
transpired, the harvest passed, yet we were not saved´? 21 I was bewildered over the
affliction of the daughter of my people; in my confusion, pains seized me as of a
woman giving birth. 22 Is there no rosin in Gilead, or is there no physician there? Why
did no healing of the daughter of my people result? 23 Who will give water for my head
and a fountain of tears for my eyes, and I will weep for this my people day and night,
those of the daughter of my people who have been wounded?
Jeremiah 9 A
1 Who will give me the last lodging in the desert, and I will leave my people and
depart from them? For they all are committing adultery, a concourse of the
treacherous. 2 They bent their tongues like a bow. A lie, not faith, prevailed over the
earth, for they came out of wicked things into wicked things, and they did not know
me," says the Lord. 3 "Let each of you guard against his neighbor and not trust in your
brothers, for every brother will stick his foot out, and every friend will go deceitfully.
4 Each one will mock his friend; they will not speak truth. Their tongues have learned to
speak lies; they engaged in wrongdoing and did not cease in order to return. 5 There is
interest on top of interest, deceit on top of deceit; they did not want to be acquainted
with me," says the Lord.
6 Because of this, thus says the Lord: "Behold, I will set them on fire and test them,
for I will act due to the presence of the evil of the daughter of my people. 7 Their
tongues are wounding arrows; the words of their mouths are deceitful. One speaks
peaceful things to his neighbor, yet in himself has animosity. 8 Will I not make a survey
of these things," says the Lord, "or will my soul not take vengeance on such a people?
9 Take up a dirge over the mountains and a lamentation over the paths of the desert,
for they failed so that there would be no men. They did not hear the sound of
existence. They rose up, from the birds of heaven to the cattle; they departed. 10 I will
give Jerusalem to a deportation and to a residence of dragons, and I will place the cities
of Judah into obliteration so that they will not be inhabited."
11 Who is the understanding man? Let him understand this. The one who has the
word of the mouth of the Lord directed at him, let him tell you why the land perished,
kindled like a desert so that it would not be traversed. 12 The Lord said to me, "Because
they abandoned my law, which I gave before their face, and did not listen to my voice,
13 but went after the pleasures B of their wicked hearts and after the idols which their
fathers taught them." 14 Because of this, thus says the Lord God of Israel: "Behold, I will
feed them distresses and give them the water of bile to drink. 15 I will scatter them
among the nations, to those whom they and their fathers did not know. I will send forth
a sword over them until I have consumed them with it."
16 Thus says the Lord: "Call the lamenting women and let them come; send forth to
