voice in heaven and brought clouds up from the end of the earth; he made lightning
flashes for the rain, and brought light out of his treasures. 17 Every man became foolish
apart from knowledge; every goldsmith was ashamed due to his carvings. For they
molded false things; there is no spirit in them. 18 They are vain, ridiculed works; in the
season of their inspection they will perish. 19 The portion of Jacob is not such as this, for
the one who formed all things is himself his inheritance; the Lord is his name.
20 "You are scattering implements of war for me, and I will scatter nations by you
and get rid of kings from you. 21 By you I will scatter a horse and its rider; by you I will
scatter chariots and their riders. 22 By you I will scatter a young man and a virgin; by
you I will scatter a man and a woman. 23 By you I will scatter a shepherd and his flock;
by you I will scatter a farmer and his farm; by you I will scatter your governors and
captains.
24 I will repay to Babylon and to all the resident Chaldeans all their wicked acts which
they performed over Zion in front of your eyes," says the Lord. 25 "Behold, I am against
you, the ruined mountain which ruins all the earth; I will extend my hand over you, roll
you down from the cliffs, and give you as a mountain set on fire. 26 They will not take
from you a stone for a corner and a stone for a foundation, for you will become an
obliteration forever," says the Lord.
27 Lift up a sign over the land; sound a trumpet among the nations. Sanctify the
nations against her; summon from me against her the kingdoms A of Ararat and the
people of Ashkenaz. Station engines of war against her; bring up against her the horse
like a multitude of locusts. 28 Bring up nations against her, the king of the Medes and of
all the land, his governors, and all his captains. 29 The land shook and suffered, because
the plan of the Lord arose against Babylon in order to set up the land of Babylon for
obliteration, and in order for it not to be inhabited. 30 The fighter of Babylon failed to
battle; they will sit there during the siege. Their domination was broken; they became
like women. Her tents were set on fire; her bars were shattered. 31 A pursuer will pursue
to meet a pursuer, and an announcer to meet an announcer, in order to announce to
the king of Babylon that his city was captured. 32 At the end of his passageways they
were taken; they burned his units with fire, and his men who were warriors came out.
33 For thus says the Lord: "The houses of the king of Babylon will be threshed like a
threshing floor in season; in a little while, her harvest will arrive."
34 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon devoured me. He divided me; he overtook me as
though I were a slight darkness. He swallowed me like a dragon; he filled his belly from
my luxury. 35 "My troubles and my distresses drove me out into Babylon," she who
resides in Zion will say. "My blood is on the resident Chaldeans," Jerusalem will say.
36 Because of this, thus says the Lord: "Behold, I will judge your adversary, and I will
exact your vengeance; I will make her sea a desert and dry up her fountain. 37 Babylon
will become an obliteration and will not be inhabited. 38 They were aroused together like
lions and like the cubs of lions. 39 In their heat I will give them a potion and get them
drunk, so that they may be stupefied, sleep an eternal sleep, and not awake," says the
Lord. 40 Bring them down like lambs to a slaughter, and like rams with kids.
