their hands, 4 on the day which is coming to destroy all the Philistines. I will obliterate
Tyre and Sidon and all who remain of their help, for the Lord will eliminate those who
remain of the islands. 5 A bald spot was present on Gaza; Ashkelon was thrown away, as
well as those who remain of the Anakim. 6 How long will you cut down, O sword of the
Lord? How long will you not be quiet? Be restored to your sheath; rest and be taken
away. 7 How will it be quiet? The Lord commanded it to awaken against Ashkelon and
against the coastal regions, against those who remain.
Jeremiah 30 A
1 To Idumea.
Thus says the Lord: "Wisdom is no longer in Teman; counsel perished from the
intelligent. Their wisdom has been departing; 2 their place was deceived. Go down deep
for a seat, you who reside in Dedan, for he made difficult things; I brought them
against him at the time I inspected him. 3 For grape gatherers came to you; they will not
leave you a remnant. Like thieves at night, they will impose their hand. 4 For I ravaged
Esau; I revealed their secret places. They will not be able to hide; they perished
through the hand of his brother and his ally. B 5 Your orphan is not going to be left so
that he might live; I will live, and widows are trusting in me." 6 For thus said the Lord:
"Those for whom there was no law to drink the cup were drinking it; although you have
been declared guiltless, you will not be declared guiltless, for after you have drunk you
will continue to drink. C 7 For I swore by myself," says the Lord, "that in her midst you
will become impassable, a reproach, and a curse; all her cities will be deserts forever."
8 I heard a report from the lord, and he sent forth messengers to the nations: "Gather
together and appear against her; arise for battle. 9 I gave you to be small among the
nations, contemptible among men. 10 Your pretence initiated it for you. The recklessness
of your heart broke up the holes of the cliffs; it seized the strength of the exalted hill.
For he exalted his nest like an eagle; I will pull you down from there. 11 Idumea will
become impassable; everyone who goes by will hiss at her. 12 As Sodom, Gomorrah, and
those who resided near her were overturned," said the almighty Lord, "a man will not
sit there and a son of man will not reside there. 13 Behold, he will go up like a lion from
the midst of the Jordan to the place of Ethan, for I will quickly chase them away from
her; stand the young men against her. For who is like me? Who will resist me? Who is
this shepherd who will stand in front of my face?" 14 Because of this, listen to the
counsel of the Lord which he offered against Idumea and his plan which he devised
against those who reside in Teman: "Surely the least of the sheep will be swept away;
surely their lodging will be made impassable for them. 15 For the earth was shaken due
to the sound of their fall, and your cry was not heard in the sea. D 16 Behold, he will see
