hear a word from my mouth. 8 When I say to the sinner, `You will be put to death,´ and
you do not speak to preserve the ungodly person from his way, the lawless person
himself will die in his lawlessness, and I will require his blood from your hand. 9 But if
you forewarn the ungodly person about his way so as to turn from it, and he does not
turn from his way, the latter will die in his ungodliness, yet you yourself have delivered
your own soul.
10 Son of man, say to the house of Israel, `You spoke in this way: "Our wanderings
and our lawless acts are upon us, and in them we are wasting away; how will we
live?"´ 11 Say to them, `As I live,´ says the Lord, `I do not wish the death of the
ungodly person, in order for the ungodly person to turn from his way and for him to
live. Turn from your way; why will you die, O house of Israel?´ 12 Say to the sons of
your people, `The righteousness of the righteous person will not rescue him on
whatever day he wanders, and the lawlessness of the ungodly person will not harm him
on whatever day he turns from his lawlessness; a righteous person will not be able to
be saved on the day of his sin. A 13 When I say to the righteous person, "You will live,"
and he has trusted in his righteousness yet performs lawlessness, B none of his acts of
righteousness will be remembered; he will die in his unrighteousness which he
performed. 14 When I say to the ungodly person, "You will be put to death," he will turn
from his sin, perform justice and righteousness, 15 repay a pledge, make compensation
for plunder, and travel in the ordinances of life so as not to do wrong; he will live and
will not die. 16 None of his sins which he committed will be remembered, for he
performed justice and righteousness; in them he will live.´
17 The sons of your people will say, `The way of the Lord is not straight,´ yet this
way of theirs is not straight. 18 When the righteous person turns from his righteousness
and performs lawless acts, he will die in them. 19 When the sinner turns from his
lawlessness and performs justice and righteousness, in them he himself will live. 20 This
is what you said: `The way of the Lord is not straight.´ I will judge you, O house of
Israel, each one in his ways."
21 It happened that, in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the twelfth month, on the
fifth of the month, one who was brought safely from Jerusalem came to me, saying,
"The city has been captured." 22 The hand of the Lord was upon me in the evening
before he came, and he opened my mouth. Until he came to me in the morning, my
mouth was open; it was no longer constrained.
23 The word of the Lord was directed at me, saying, 24 "Son of man, those who reside
in the deserted places on the land of Israel are saying, `Abraham was one, and he
possessed the land. We are more numerous; to us the land has been given as a
possession.´ 25 Because of this, say to them, `So said the Lord Adonai: "You eat things
with blood, you take your eyes toward your idols, and you pour out blood; will you
inherit the land? 26 You stand on your sword, you perform an abomination, and every
