the same time, for I will extend my hand over those who reside in this land," says the
Lord. 13 "For from the least of them even to the greatest, they all completed lawless
acts; from the priest even to the false prophet, they all produced lies. 14 They healed the
fracture of my people with contempt, saying, `Peace, peace!´ yet where is the peace?
15 They were ashamed because they failed, yet they were not ashamed like those who
are being put to shame, and they did not know their dishonor. Because of this, when
they will fall they will indeed fall, and in the season of their inspection they will perish,"
said the Lord.
16 Thus says the Lord: "Stand on the ways and look; make a request for the ancient
paths of the Lord, and look at what is the good way. Proceed on it, and you will find
purification for your souls. They said, `We will not go.´ 17 I installed watchmen over
you, saying, `Listen to the sound of the trumpet.´ They said, `We will not listen.´
18 Because of this, the nations listened, and those who shepherd their flocks. 19 Listen, O
earth! Behold, I am bringing wicked things over this people, the fruit of their turning
away, for they did not hold on to my words, and they rejected my law. 20 Why do you
bring me incense from Sheba and cinnamon from a land far away? Your whole burnt
offerings are not acceptable, and your sacrifices were not pleasant for me." 21 Because
of this, thus says the Lord: "Behold, I am giving weakness over this people, and in it
fathers and sons together will be weak; a bystander and his neighbor will perish."
22 Thus says the Lord: "Behold, a people is coming from the north, and nations will
be aroused from the end of the earth. 23 They will take hold of a bow and a spear; they
are reckless and will not show mercy. Their voice is like a roaring sea; they will line up
for battle against you like fire over horses and chariots, O daughter of Zion. 24 We heard
their report. Our hands relaxed; oppression seized us, pains like those of someone
giving birth. 25 Do not go out into the field, and do not proceed on the ways, for the
sword of the enemies is sojourning all around. 26 O daughter of my people, gird yourself
with sackcloth; sprinkle ashes. Make for yourself the grief of a beloved, pitiable
mourning, for misery will suddenly arrive over you.
27 I have given you as an approver among approved peoples, and you will know me
when I approve their way. 28 They are all unresponsive; they are going crookedly. They
are bronze and iron; they were all corrupted. 29 The bellows from the fire failed; the lead
failed. The silversmith works in vain; their evil did not melt. 30 Call them disapproved
silver, because the Lord disapproved them."
Jeremiah 7 A
2 Hear the word of the Lord, all Judea. 3 Thus says the Lord God of Israel: "Correct
your ways and your habits, and I will cause you to reside in this place. 4 Do not trust in
yourselves with lying words, for they will not benefit you at all when you say, `The
sanctuary of the Lord! It is the sanctuary of the Lord!´ 5 For if you correct your ways
and your habits, execute justice between a man and his neighbor, 6 do not overpower a
guest, an orphan, and a widow, do not shed innocent blood in this place, and do not go
Lord."
