HABAKKUK 1
1 The statement which Habakkuk the prophet saw.
2 How long, O Lord, will I shout, and you will not listen? Will I cry out to you while I
am being harmed, and you will not save? 3 Why did you show me troubles and labors?
To gaze at misery and ungodliness? Justice is opposed to me, yet the judge receives it.
4 Because of this, law is being tossed aside and judgment is never settled completely,
for the ungodly one is overpowering the righteous one. On account of this, the
judgment will come out perverted.
5 Look, you despisers, and stare; wonder at the wonder, and disappear. For I am
performing a work in your days which you would not believe even if someone declared
it. 6 For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, A the bitter and speedy nation, the one
who goes over the breadth of the earth to inherit dwellings which are not his. 7 He is
fearful and conspicuous; his judgment will be from himself, and his statement will come
from himself. 8 His horses will leap more than leopards, and they are fiercer than the
wolves of Arabia. His horsemen will ride forth and will rush from a distance; they will fly
like an eagle which is eager to eat. 9 An ending will come to the ungodly, as their faces
make a stand in opposition, and it will gather captivity like sand. 10 He himself will play
with kings, and princes are his toys. He will mock at every stronghold; he will throw up
a dike and take possession of it. 11 Then he will change his spirit, pass by, and seek
atonement: "This strength belongs to my god."
12 Are you not from the beginning, O Lord God, my Holy One? We will not die. O
Lord, you have arrayed him for judgment; he formed me to reprove his instruction.
13 The pure eye is not to look at evil things and stare at painful labors. B Why do you
stare at those who despise? Will you be silent when the ungodly one swallows the
righteous one? 14 Will you make men like the fish of the sea, and like the creeping things
which have no guide? 15 He pulled down an ending with a hook, drew it in with a net,
and caught it in his dragnet; on account of this, he will be cheerful and his heart will
rejoice. 16 On account of this, he will sacrifice to his dragnet and burn incense to his net,
because by them he fattened his portion, and his foods are choice. 17 Because of this, he
will cast his net, and will not spare in killing the nations continually.
Habakkuk 2
1 I will stand on my guard; I will mount up on a cliff; I will watch to see what he will
say by me, and how I will reply to my reproof. 2 The Lord replied to me and said, "Write
the vision clearly on the board, so that the one who reads them may pursue them. 3 For
